London Calling - Another Tory Fuck Up...

I noticed with some concern that when they had the London 2012 Olympic speeches today from Boris Johnson - London (Conservative/right wing) Mayor and Lord Coe - British Olympic Chief and (Conservative/right wing) member of the House Of Lords, the music they chose as a background 'theme' with all lyrics blaring out, was 'London Calling' by The Clash.

As Wikipedia says:

""London Calling", the album's opening track, was partially influenced by the March 1979 meltdown of a nuclear reactor at Three Mile Island in Pennsylvania. Strummer's lyrics also discuss the problems of rising unemployment, racial conflict and drug use in Britain.

What a great indication of things to come.

If this is yet another indication of the incompetence of the British Olympic effort, I suppose we'll see the next 'Games' in 2016...

Seems like its a fair call to me. Even if anyone could be bothered to analyse the lyrics, they are pretty accurate and appropriate in these times.

And I can't really blame this on Tories either. The bid to win the Olympics was financially backed by our current government, who also woefully underestimated the costs.

Surely Lord Coe is there as a figurehead of sporting excellence, and Johnson has only recently inherited the job from a government backed weasel.

I recently read an article blaming the current economic crisis on Thatcher; amazingly rich stuff all round considering the party hasnt been in power for twelve years, and back in 1996 the Olympic bid was not even a whisper.

Isn't slagging the Tories by default a bit clichéd these days?

I mean I'm by no means right wing but it's not 1988 any more

My impression these days is that most of the major political parties are as bad as each other and being a Labour or Lib Dems supporter is no more useful than being a Tory one.

They're all fucking gash.

Actually, it's a comment on those who chose and authorised the use of the song for that particular event - an incredibly bad choice that was made neither by the Labour Party or Ken Livingstone.

It was 'okayed' by the Mayor's Office and the British Olympic Committee - headed by Seb Coe.

I think maybe you guys missed the point...

Song does seem a bit inappropriate... I mean its clear to hear "now war is declared and the battle come down" regardless if anyone spends anytime to listen tot he lyrics, those definately are contradictory of wht the olympics represent...

I can't comment on this much, but the lyrics are bit strange to be used for the Olympics...that being said, some imbecile senile politician (actually the governor of Tokyo) wants the 2016 Olympics here in this country. (How many international sport events do we want FFS in a span of a couple of decades???? The winter Olympics in 1998, co-hosting the World Cup with South Korea in 2002, the Athletics thing in Osaka in 2007....) I don't want the Olympics in Japan in 2016, and we probably won't get it anyway...only that senile idiot is pushing for it.

I should stop here cause I'm getting off-topic, but maybe the politicians should have picked a better song.

i agree, chris. lazy. not the besy way to promote our nation to the rest of the world.

they've obviously chosen to capitalise on our 'edgy' musical heritage - led zep at the handover and now this. ironic when you consider some of the key faces involved so far - some tories, a dumbass footballer who's more of a brand than anything else, and the winner of a reality tv show.

the fact that it's that buffoon boris who stood in front of it is just the icing on the cake.

Just aswell I never went to the parade, I might of been so influenced by the Torys, one thing I would of never wanted in my life to look back on:lol:

A few things come to mind.......

  1. Was Three Mile Island, really in Docklands or somthing and I missed it? (I love the enviro-mentalists saying it "killed an unknown number of people" like it means 10's of 1000's, when it really means, they've never found a death that could be attributed to it (or they'd quote it as "killed at least.....".)

  2. When I think of Labour vs Tories today, all I can think of is that last line of Animal Farm about the animals looking from pig to man and man to pig. Anti-union, anti-nationalisation anti-welfare state etc etc etc. I looks like they picked up cuntpustule's 1987 manifesto, crossed out Conservative and wrote "Labour" in in crayon.

Our democratic system is now no less of a joke than that of the septics. Who do I vote for (assuming people in NI had the right to vote for a government) if I wanted more rights for workers, massive investment in the railways, re-nationalisation of airports[1] etc etc etc.

  1. 2012=massive, and I mean light years from side to side, really HUGE, jewel encrusted clusterfuck.

[1] Not to mention ATC....even the fucking yanks who are RABID capitalists didn't privatise fucking ATC. I was so horrified by this plan, that I tuned it out of my head....it may now already have happened without me noticing.

And how many people know the song only for the lyric "London Calling"? But anything to take a pop at the Tories, eh?

Ultimately, who gives a fuck?

Nobody. They just liked the chorus.

The current economic crisis is entirely due to the Conservatives though, or more specifically due to the county's failure to elect Michael Foot in 1983, so it's still perfectly valid for us to blame them for anything we feel like blaming them for.

Which was due to Michael Foots absolute incompetence as Labour leader which caused the gang of four to go away, form the SDP, and split the vote massively and gave the Tories a landslide.

Read that in a book did you?

Shitface.

Sadly, you're crediting the voting public with more than they deserve.

Michael Foot lost that election because he was a scruffy man who went on about boring stuff while Thatcher stuck rigidly to waving her blood-stained flag and trolling out meaningless soundbites.

You won't find the history of this nation in books - it is written in the Sun.

Is Liam Boris Johnson? :skeptic:

And Ally, it's never cliched to slag the Tories. Labour are doing a good job at looking useless, granted. But I'd never go back to the Tories, they might seem like a voteable party promising this, that and the other, but believe me, as soon as they cunts get into power things would get a lot worse.

Did anyone catch their Party Conferences this year? They seem to get more unlikeable as the years pass. They banned themselves from drinking Champagne cos they didn't want to look over indulgent!?! Fucking horrible, arrogant, upperclass arseholes

I don't know how you can say that the Labour Party are looking inept right now, Shug. Their handling of the banking crisis is winning universal admiration and copied all over the world. Brown does look like a cow's arse though. He should do something about that.

Seriously, I fucking loved his response when a journalist asked him how he felt about being called a hero.

Politics is full of ups and downs, he said.

Any other politician in history would be on the back of an open-topped bus waving a big flag marked "hero" at the moment; especially with an election looming.

He's gonna get cunted in the election, but he's a real man in my eyes. These are the last months for many years where politics will mean anything at all. Let's hope they get it right because the lunatics are about to take over the asylum and its not going to be nice.

The bankers will want their money bank and the Tories are the party to help.

Go Lib Dems, Shug

They were quite content to put forward a lush to be prime minister.

My point was I think pretty much all the major parties are unelectable; I wouldn't vote Tory as much as any of the others really.

Wouldn't legitimate any of the mainstream parties by casting a vote for them. Wild horses won't drag me to the polling booth at the next election.

What's that thing going on with Gordon Brown's mouth by the way? That thing he does where he looks like he's always chewing gum?

I seriously doubt Boris has the knowledge of Election Results that I do.

It's easy to say mate, espescially when you take the following into consideration :

Threatening an election then shitting it, ID Cards, 42 Days Detention, 10p tax fuck up, now a new BigBrother plan to monitor everyone's email and internet - this on top of losing all benefit claiment details last year.

I agree they have started heading in the right direction, Brown needs to grow a bigger pair and get back to the ideas he had when we were trying to get into Government in the first place though.

Far more appropriate:

Riding through the city on my bike all day, 'Coz the filth took away my license. It doesn't get me down and I feel OK, As the sights that I'm seeing are priceless Everything seems to look as it should, But, I wonder what goes on behind doors. A fella looking dapper - and he's sitting with a slapper, Then I see it's a p**p and his crack whore

You might laugh - you might frown, Walking round London town (Chorus) Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why Would I wanna be anywhere else? Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why Would I wanna be anywhere else? When you look with your eyes, Everything seems nice... But, if you look twice, You can see it's all lies

(Verse 2) There was a little old lady, Who was walkin down the road, She was struggling with bags from the tesco. There were people from the city having lunch in the park, I believe that is called 'al fresco'. When a child came along to offer a hand, But before she had time to accept it, Hits her over the head - doesn't care if she dead, 'Cause he's got all her jewellery and wallet

You might laugh - you might frown, Walkin round London town.

(Chorus) Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why Would I wanna be anywhere else? Sun is in the sky oh why, oh why Would I wanna be anywhere else? When you look with your eyes, Everything seems nice... But, if you look twice, You can see it's all lies

Life, yeah that's city life Yeah that's city life Yeah that's city life

Life, yeah that's city life Yeah that's city life Yeah that's city life

(Chorus) Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why Would I wanna be anywhere else? Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why Would I wanna be anywhere else? Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why Would I wanna be anywhere else? Sun is in the sky, oh why, oh why Would I wanna be anywhere else? When you look with your eyes, Everything seems nice... But, if you look twice, You can see it's all lies When you look with your eyes, Everything seems nice... But, if you look twice, You can see it's all lies (PHONE RINGS) (SHE TALKS)
