You'll never guess who I was racing with on iRacing the other night.

Only fuckin Dale Earnhardt Jnr!

Ok, "racing with" is a bit strong, I don't DO ovals, this was an off-season uniffical race so I thought "why not". It was Formula Mazda (now called Star Mazda apparently) at Milwaukee Mile. Dale lapped me three times :( I finished 8th of 20 starters and 12 finishers.....would have done better but I had to pit for repairs after coming round a turn to find the track blocked across it's full width with other people's accidents.....cost me a lap and a bit, and it was only a 50 lap race!

And it was the real bloke BTW, for one thing, he's involved with the development of the simulator, for another, you must race in the name entered on your payment card, and anyway, I know his voice.

Iracing BTW, has cost me a fortune, but has proved to be more fun even than GPL, I've run round multiple laps, INCHES from other drivers, the netcode and quality of the participants (generally) are so good it's doable.

How about that?

You're about the only person he's lapping these days. I wonder if Hendrick is having buyer's remorse right about now?

Well that just shows how fucking slow I am then. Thanks.

My previous best claims were that I got thrashed (at GPL) by a guy who got thrashed by Juan Pablo Montoya (an obsessive GPLer to the point where his gaming PC toured the world in his Williams/McRon motorhome, and he'd get out of a real F1 car, and go race in the game.....it shows like fuck in his driving style too). And I also raced Takuma Sato a few times when he was still in UK F3 (GPL again)......I overtook him a couple of times too, particularly one total blinder up the inside into the first Lesmo. Imagine how hard I laughed five or six years later to see the self same Sato San overtake Fernando Alonso in a total shitemobile.

Was a hard job not mentioning a certain comment by D.E.Snr RE:HANS device, over his dead body etc.

But even I'm not a big enough jerk to make fun of someone's dead dad.....well OK, I am, but I let it slide.

Very cool. Road & Track has an article about iRacing in this month's edition.

Re: Dale Sr. I was listening to the end of the Daytona 500 on the radio when he crashed. The first thing I remember thinking was "the Intimidator" finally got a dose of his own medicine. I thought the guy was a real douche, but I didn't want to see him dead.

Thanks for the link.

It's never good to see a racer hurt, but given all the shite he'd been talking about HANS, and given that his accident was caused by his trying to cheat Jnr past someone else for a 1-2 finish, few tears were shed. Not been paying much attention to racing stateside lately, only really been watching ALMS. Really should make an effort to watch the Nazzers though, just to see JPM and Villeneuve in action in those strange strange cars.

Iracing is still a bit US-centric, with the only non-US cirction being Silverstone, with Mosport coming soon. It badly needs the Nordschleife and Spa and La Sarthe.

"...the Nordschleife..." I've posted some pretty good times there. On Project Gotham!

I like JPM in NASCAR. He doesn't take crap from anyone. I remember JPM (still with BMW F1) and Jeff Gordon switched rides for a few laps for a photo op. I think it would be funny (and probably very costly!) to see a bunch of yankee tin top jockeys have to slide into open wheel cars and go racing.

Round Monaco!

I remember when the Nascar2003-GPL track convertor came out. We were all having a ball racing IMS and Lowes and Talledega....then someone realised you could convert in the other direction and suddenly we had Nazzers at the Nordy and round Monaco. The Station Hairpin just looked like a junkyard in the screenies I seen, cars piled up high.

If you ever see it, grab any footage of JPM in F3000 that you can, he was unbelievable, an absolutely bell-end, but with more driving talent than most world champions.

Remember watching him spin as the green came out at Portland in CART, did a 180, floored it, shot backwards up the track in a cloud of tyre smoke, then flicked it round the right way, having lost only 4 or 5 places.....which he got back because his spin had kept the yellow out. Or watching him getting the champcar SIDEWAYS at NAZERETH and NO DYING!
