Icons and 'characters'?
Surely we have:
Dame Elton John, Sir Paul McCartney, Mick Jagger, Sting, Sir Bob Geldof, Ronnie Wood, Mark Knopfler, Debbie Harry, Sir Cliff Richard, John 'Butter wouldn't melt unless you paid me lots of cash to advertise it' Lydon and all the other people who should have retired years ago...
Thankfully, we also have:
Mark E Smith, Peter Hook, Bernard Sumner, Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Stephen Morris, Rat Scabies, Captain Sensible, Colin Jerwood, Danbert Nobacon, Karl Bartos, Penny Rimbaud, etc.
All is not completely lost. Yet.

and what about har mar? i think he's a big tit, but he's certainly a character. fyfe dangerfield's a cute little eccentric. alison goldfrapp. winehouse. doherty.
firstborn suggests beyonce and jay-z. arek makes a really good point, i think.
Given that most people in music are young, maybe it's just because theres a huge proportion of people in their early twenties who are just cocks with nothing interesting to say yet incessantly witter on trying to be controversial.

But Arek is RIGHT on the money....twenty years from now, that wHinehouse woman will be a "troubled genius" instead of a skanky lightweight who can't handle her drugs. Look what they did to Ian Curtis FFS! Or how Jim Morrison is today thought of as more than a boozesoaked floater.
it depends on your definition of characters and icons, everyone is a character, even Simon Cowel, just because he's a prick, doesn't mean he's not a character.
as for icons, from my point of view, kraftwerk, new order, orbital, chemical brothers, primal scream and even oasis are all pretty iconic, and still (despite being split up in some cases) having the occasional release, they aren't ground breaking anymore, but at this point nothing really is.
As someone said to me earlier today, it's time for another punk style revolution, all the kids that call themselves punks these days, just haven't got a clue as to WHY punk was, which is more important than WHAT punk was.

There are definetly very few in the 20's age group for sure. Pete Doherty almost made it but otherwise its a bit of a
