....played the opening night of the 'Sheffield Steel City Tour' at the Academy Glasgow last night. I've said before that I aint a fan of all this 'retro' bollocks but a mate had a guest list so I toddled along.

And what a great night's entertainment it was. Heaven 17 rocked it, 'Let Me Go' and a remix of 'Penthouse & Pavements' being the highlights. ABC were a bit dissapointing, you forget how much of their stuff was just straight-ahead 'white funk'. Too much slap bass and too many sax solos.

Human League were feckin excellent tho. Opened with 'Seconds' and then it was just a greatest hits set. Stand-outs for me were 'Open Your Heart' and 'Empire State Human' but they really didn't put a foot wrong.

And see that blonde one, who must be well into her mid 40s by now, you still most defineately would.

Going to see it at the Brighton Centre on Fri, can't wait!

Was lucky enough to see Heaven 17's second ever gig at Portsmouth Wedgewood Rooms - it was a warm-up for their Erasure support slot in 1997. Fantastic, one of my top ten gigs of all time.

I saw that tour, went to see them in Sheffield supporting Erasure. Excellent redux of Temptation I thought!

Human League are still ace. SECRETS ,their last studio album was a top album,it could have easily come out straight after DARE.

It would be an intriging sight to see if H17 and HL merged to do some stuff of Reproduction and Travelogue.

I went to the Toon' show the other night (Mon) -bloody good stuff. Sad i know but the League are in my top ten bands!! seen em good few times. This packaged night was jolly good fun - not a patch on Dare in its entirity (@ The Sage) but funstance. ABC were class - still buy their albums now, like me white funk i do

What a cracking night! Not the VERSUS CANCER-like collaborating that I'd hoped between old HL and new HL,but Heaven 17 rocked. Glenn Gregory is ageless...well..with his hat on.2 remarkable female backing singers. And is it me or does Martyn Ware look more like Quentin Wilson these days? Really good updated versions of Temptation and Geisha Boys & Temple Girls. Never been a big fan of ABC,but couldn't resist singing along to When Smokey Sings. Highlight though the League with a stunning backdrop.Opening with one of my faves SECONDS,Mr Oakey is the coolest bald person on the planet...sorry Al. Got a great vid to put on YouTube of Seconds & Mirror Man,soon as I replace this shit Bluetooth dongle! In the meantime, here's some piccies...

The encore was the epic dirty majesty of Being Boiled followed by the puke-inducing niceness of Electric Dreams.

Talk about going from the sublime to the ridiculous!
