So, we have just entered possibly the worst recession for 70 years and yet people are still het up about Christmas shopping. January/February the purge will be more extreme than ever as people lurch from over-indulgence to self imposed calvinism.

So why on earth do people do it? Is it the mark of a juvenile and retarded mentality, the desire to please their children for 2 mins with the latest filth from Sony, Apple etc and then pay for it by living on virtually bugger all for the next three months.

Obviously it is much more desirable to have a more regular pattern of spending, even at the best of times cash flow figures go helter skelter Nov-Feb. A moratorium on Christmas makes sense. Sorry chaps, Ramadhan is just about the purest festival in existence.

Do you understand how money works?

People spending money at Xmas is a very good thing, especially given the current economic climate.

Why do you think interest rates are at an all-time low? Or VAT has been dropped back to 15%? It's measures like this that are put in place to stimulate the economy and encourage people to start spending/lending/borrowing again.

What exactly is so great about only eating when it's dark? It's not really fasting when every Muslim I know stuffs themselves silly the minute the sun goes down and in the half hour before it comes back up. And then there's the two chaps I know who work permenant Nights...

Compared with Christmas, which has no sacrifices at all. Lent is alright, but that barely cancels out the excesses of December.

So, all religious festivals/celebrations must involve sacrice? Dick.

You should try studying religious festivals world wide you plank.

I'm the most atheistic cunt imaginable and even I have time for Christmas, putting smiles on faces is just SOOOOO evil isn't it?

Pleasure seeking is the norm rather than the exception. Even if for a short time, that 12 hours or so of fasting has a useful function. Although listening to New Order no doubt is haraam.

So its better to have a fast during the day, then go into complete excesses and parties in the evenings, 30 days in a row?

I have no problem with Ramadan, but calling it the "pureset festival" is an assinine statement...

Christmas has been over-commercialised for many years, but by the secular majority, rather those who retain religious belief.

It would be ignorant to presume that all followers of any of the main religions strictly stick to the proscribed rules though.

However, you seem to be conveniently forgetting the forty days of the Christian period of 'Lent' where self-denial does not simply extend to daylight hours. It lasts the full 40 days and nights if strictly observed.

I'm agnostic, but I can respect people's beliefs and especially those who devoutly believe the teachings of their respective religious leaders, whether I agree with the religious practices or not.

You seem to have completely missed the close connections between Islam and Christianity that are often blindly denied by the followers of both faiths - both in 'true' teachings, religious beliefs, prophets and practices.

Both have times of fasting, penitence and self-denial, but both have 'feast' days and times of excess and celebration. What do you do at the end of Ramadan? Oh... have a feast...

The hypocrisy is astounding, but unsurprising, when it comes from the partially-educated as far as world religions is concerned.

Oh and yes, what pc do you have and what job do you do, or are you simply living off the benefits handed out by the excessive, capitalist government of a (nominally) Christian State?

Christmas is simply the time of year where people of all religions come together to celebrate the birth of santa.

I figure instead of spending money, be creative- I write my Gran a christmas story every year and tell it round the fireplace. I couldn't really buy her stuff anyway- its generally hard to buy gifts for people of different generations.

Poor old dear's probably sitting there thinking...."All the other girls in the drop in centre get socks, hats and huge tins of bickies and shortbread from their grandkids.....and all I get's a fookin story, I told that daughter if mine to drown em at birth but she wouldn't listen"

Hang on, so because people overspend at Christmas, this makes Ramadan the "purest religous fesitival" around?

WHAT A LOAD OF COMPLETE BOLLOCKS.

What about Eid- THE MAIN ISLAMIC RELIGIOUS FESTIVAL.

What about all the Hindu, Bddhist, Sikh and Jewish festivals. Becuase you dont like other people spending money at Christmas, this reflects bad on other religious festivals.

You really are a collasal turd.
