I used to work with a fanatical Clash fan who sometimes played their studio albums on the shop stereo but I don't remember hearing anything on them that was as good as some of the hit singles I vaguely remembered from my youth (but I may have missed something special because I was working at the time so please tell me if I have) so the only Clash CD I've bought is the optimistically-titled "The Story Of The Clash Volume 1". However, since it only cost me £7.50 I got a good bargain because it includes Rock The Casbah, Should I Stay Or Should I Go, I Fought The Law, Lost In The Supermarket, Career Opportunities and London Calling (which is probably my favourite, although the intro to I Fought The Law nearly tipped the vote in its favour).

Altogether now... "Breaking rocks in the hot sun..."

Okay shug, here ya go. Let's see....Complete Control, White Man, Career Opportunities, I Fought The Law, Capital Radio, Safe European Home, Brand New Cadillac, Right Profile, Wrong 'Em Boyo, Magnificen Seven, Bankrobber, One More Time....that's a pretty good start.

Did manage to see them live opening for the Who on the first of their farewell tours at the enormous Kingdome in Seattle. Lots of pogoing upfront, and I was wiped out after the 60 minute set. The Who weren't so good, so I spent the rest of the gig watching from behind the stage trying to recover.

I preferred B.A.D

I liked all the Clash's more commercial sounding stuff like Hitsville UK, Train in Vain and The Magnificent Seven.

Though White Man... and Bankrobber are quality tunes.

I bought the recent "Alternative Eighties" compilation because it was cheap and there were a lot of good tracks on it by some of the 80's indie scene's one-hit wonders. The first track on disc one is The Clash's "Rock The Casbah" and in the third verse I can clearly hear something that sounds like a mobile phone ring-tone. The first time I can hear it is in the third line ("The in-crowd say it's cool") and it is repeated during every other line in the rest of the verse. I've listened to the version on "The Story Of The Clash" and I can't hear it on there (it may be there but if it is it's much much quieter) even though I've got the remastered version that was released in 1999. There are other sound effects in both versions but they sound as if they are part of the track. The ring-tone sound effect in the version on the compilation album is quite loud and sounds completely out of place. Are there two slightly different versions of Rock The Casbah (such as an album version and a single version), have I got a faulty CD or did a studio engineer who helped compile "Alternative Eighties" over-dub the sound of their mobile phone on to the track before the album was mastered for a laugh?

Ij happen to know someone who plays with a band at the moment who can only wish they possessed as much stijle and flair as the Clash once did...

What about "Sandinista"? Like the old saying went...it would have made a good Three-Sided album!! :D :D

Some superb stuff on there - don't get me wrong - just too long and self-indulgent (remember how lucky they were to get away with "London Calling" being a double!! A FIRST for punk, eh??!! Who'd have imagined that?? At least all the songs on it were top class!!). "Sandinista" kind of over-stepped the mark a wee bit with its dub workouts and stuff like that... but then, hey, that's only my own opinion of course! ;)
