History is history as you say. My country is almost 1,000 years older than yours... It lays on the European Continent with many different terrestrian borders. Add to this two different seas (almost three if you take in account the Channel as one). The French have always been less numerous than their neighbors - living in smaller countries. You got these facts ?

For the military records, I think we learnt enough if a war is worth it or not. We "hosted" almost all the wars my country had been involved in.

We can be as grateful as you, if we dare. Reliable ally you said ? WWI started in 1914, you arrived in 1917. WWII started in 1939, you did nothing until 1941 - at least the British gave help until they left in Dunkirk. It took you almost two years to choose the good French government. Churchill, at least, recognised the good one by the Battle of Britain, 1940. The landing in Normandy, 1944? I have the greatest respect for the young Americans (and others) who died on these beaches, but it makes no doubt to me that the US landed in France only because my country was on the way to Germany and not for the sake of the French people. Land in Belgium or in the Netherlands or push Northward by Italy could have been other options, if we are so unreliable. Indochina war ? Lost. Vietnam war ? Lost also. You left there a greater chaos than we. Your country always does better, greater.

Do you think the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq are won ? Maybe on a military scale, but what will remain in these countries after the withdrawal of Western armies ?

If history is history and that history keeps repeating, I have a little idea of what these countries are likely to become. And I have already a motto for this : "Blame it on the French".

From all my understandings, America had a far different policy than it does since WWII. We were isolationists, and wanted nothing to do with Europeon bickering. We relucantly involved ourselves in WWI and the same goes for WWII. Britian was our one true ally, but even then we only wanted to help with supllies and arms, not direct involvement. It was only until the uboats were sinking our supply ships and Britian looked destined to fall that we begrungedly became involved. There of course were immigrants from both sides of the war, so the population was definately split due to these biases... and of course there was an enterprising industry... but the claims that we only wanted to make money on both sides I think is incorrect. We simply didn't believe the wars had anything to do with us, as the US were isolationists at the time.

i was daft enough to follow daequan's link 'meat grinders' which lead to a load of messages about viruses saying that my computer is now infected. anyone know if this is likely to be the case or just a wind up? i've done two different system security scans but no problems have been identified.

I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong, but it's unlikely that you can get anything nasty without actually downloading a file. Quite often these pop-ups that say you've got a virus will encourage you to download something to fix the problem. The thing you download will be nasty, and then begins a bad spiral of downloading more stuff. Pretty soon you'll be asked to pay for it. Someone I know parted with a couple of hundred quid in this way (including a couple of duplicate card transactions and premium-rate phone line calls to try to get the money back).

The lesson is, as always, don't click on anything unless you know what it is, same rule ten times over for downloading files and same rule a thousand times over before you get your credit card out.
