Triple P Christ says: I am demanding an end to the practice of using live dogs as shark bait.: "People like you are causing the death of Mankind's Name and right to live"

(Jem, it's a scam - nobody is using live dogs for shark bait)
What a way to go though. If I was a dog, and I was answering one of those dumb questionnaires with questions like "how would you like to die" I would definitely consider being used as live shark bait.

Someone signed it, saying 'I am demanding an end to the practice, because it will lead to a food crisis in South Korea.
Says it's already against the law. Hell, they shouldn't be killing the sharks anyway, they probably have a really stupid reason for doing that.

I hope you're right. While you're on the link, check out the Confessions page ![]()
Bless her little concerned socks though.
Sharks (from Doggies and Thornies and Skate all the way to Mako and Great White) don't even respond particularly well to live fishbaits. It's better to use deadbait and troll it like mad behind a boat to give it some excitement, or to leave it hanging on a float (usually a balloon) and let the scent do the trick. Besides, most sharks, and certainly those in French atlantic waters wouldn't be big enough to handle anything bigger than a pekinese, and they aren't real dogs so it wouldn't matter. There are Great White reported in the Med, and Mako are fairly commonly recorded there too.....but really, half a dozen mackerkel or a small tuna are.....
a. more effective. b. easier to catch c. easier to hook (and tie I might add, you couldn't support such a huge bate by hook alone). d. and this is a biggie....natural shark food.
Now I DO know someone who caught a conger eel using a recently bisected rat for bait....someone who caught one using a roast chicken carcass......and a guy who swears that ducklings would make the perfect pike bait (when I asked him why, despite the fact that pike do take anything stupid enough to make a noise then sit still, he felt they'd be an optimal bait......he said "kittens can't swim" I shit you not! I didn't enquire further and decided for my own sanity's sake that he was winding me up....but he was a weird lad alright).
And on a final note, most anglers would bludgeon any cunt who did this to death, and use the remains for groundbait. I've seen people rather badly walloped and thrown in the drink for trying to catch seals before (this was before our local seals sussed anglers out and WOULD still take a spinner or hook bait.....these days you can trail your hook past their nose and they wont flinch....and they've learned that if they herd fish towards our mark....they will get share, I shit you not).
I'm ALWAYS right.
That hook would never take the weight of that dog, for one. Not like that, anyway. You'd want to push it right up through the roof of it's mouth, or better still just wrap the line around it's neck and body. The photo is most likely of a dog which has accidentally been snared onto the hook.

Sport fishing rules consider a fish as "landed" if you can touch the leader line (A thick 6-20 feet of heavy line to resist the fish biting through), so you do not even have to haul them out....not only would this involve a gaff, which usually causes minimal injury, but can do real harm on larger fish....but many sharks internal organs are irrepairably damaged if they are set of dry land on their bellies).
I enjoy fishing a great deal and have nothing but contempt for anyone who takes a fish for no reason.....if you kill it it must be for a purpose, if you have no use for it, it must be returned in a fit and healthy condition. Some people think I've lost my marbles when they see me start returning mackerel.....which really are (along with herring) "sea wildebeast".....they exist solely to be eaten by everything else.
There is a link to a story from that page. Don't know if it really is a widespread problem but seems to say they hook the animals beforehand so they start bleeding good, then set them as bait in traps in the water. I assume the animals drown rather quickly if still alive.

Funny, if I might say so, as they talked about it on the telly this afternoon.
I am afraid to report to you that this story might be very true - otherwise the program I have been watching was a conspiracy with a lot of comedians hired for the occasion.
Good point to Steve. No shark would be able to eat these dogs here or on both side of the Atlantic ocean. However l'île de la Réunion lies on the Indian ocean. Take a map and look for a stain E-N-E of Madagascar.
I have relatives living there. They told me that the seaside was dangerous because of sharks... It lets me think that their sharks are bigger than ours...
Dunno about that but one thing i did find upsetting was a Grolsch advert the other night. A man falls out of the sky still strapped to his aeroplane seat. Right on the 20th anniversary of Lockerbie. Insensitive ignorant bastards.
If it IS true, there's a WHOLE lot of guys who need made into groundbait.
FFS even livebaiting with ickle fish is banned in Ireland.
That picture but.....there is no way that's real, it's not any kind of a sensible way to present such a large bait, and also there is a distinct lack of blood where the hook enters......having had a puppy get a hook through his nose while I was tying some feathers, I can assure you there is blood, and teeth, and noise (and a considerable amount of tears on my part).....and that was a size 4 mackerel hook not a fucking 12/0 shark hook with a fucking wire trace.
Its real.... along live dog and cat skinning in China.
What I would do to those bastards.......
I do find it a bit humorous that we put definate distinction lines between animals... some are fine for slaughter and others are for loving... just because we see human qualities in them. If there was a dog problem in that part of the country, and a shark problem as well... why not use them? However if no dog problem existed, why use dogs? there's easier bait out there....
EdelBrock wrote: distinction lines between animals... some are fine for slaughter and others are for loving...
Point taken.
And to think that, without slaughters, I would surely be vegetarian...
I have been disturbed by this thread and the thing on TV.
I wanted to have a clearer view on this phenomenon.
It says that this kind of fishing is specific to île de la Réunion.
Some figures :
Continental France: Pop.: 64,473,140 Density: 93 inhab/km² Dog pop.: 8,000,000 Density: 11 dogs/km².
Island population: 793,000 Density: 313 inhab/km². Dog pop.: 300,000 Density: 119 dogs/km².
First thing that comes in mind is that, like Jarvis Cocker sang, dogs are everywhere on this island. A lot of them live freely when not returned to wild urban life, attacking sometimes humans. By this, of course, I do not intend to justify anything in favour of the ... who fish with living dogs.
Since 2005, in order to prevent this, a local act fordids dogs from harbours. Not a great success...
La Réunion is one of the poorest part of the nation. But, in its area, it is the richest land thanks to the French social system. But it does not allow the fate of dogs to be as nice as the ones in Europe. From what I have learned, they also finish, quite often, in dishes of the poorest...
Quelle vie de chien, as we say...
Jiphy, you make a good point. Wild dogs aren't the furry cute ones we've domesticated. They tend to be quite aggressive and are chuck full of diseases. Interesting on your note of population of dogs on the island.
By the way, I'm not complaining about slaughter, as I am far from ever being a vegetarian... life must take life in order to live... but somehow we have created a morality out of it all and that is a bit silly....

The ultimate example being the attitude of the Engerlish to the French eating horse. To anyone sensible, it's just a tall cow of course. Also, the Western European attitude to eating bugs is kinda funny, it's considered weird and disgusting, yet it's pretty much only here where we think that way, nearly everyone else lovees their deepfried crawlies.
As for the dogs for bait thing.....I simply cannot see the sense of it from any angle....morals and puppylove aside, they're a crap bait, they drown kinda fast (shark fishing's an all day activity), and nobody could ever catch a fish on that hook rig photoshop job on the site. The only "reason", and we're stretching the word here, must be wanton and intentional cruelty, people who get boners listening to dogs scream in pain. Let's hope a few of these cunts go over the side into a feeding frenzy.
Oh aye, boxes of old cassettes in the loft. From time to time when i'm reminded on here or wherever of an old track that i know i have on casette i've spent way too much time climbing into the loft to trawl through to find said track.Often to no success having wasted half the day.
That said, nobody arose the problem of the shark which is left bleeding without its ailerons in the sea...
One of the best experiences of my life was catching sharks one night in the Caribbean. We didn't cut their ailerons off though. I can't understand anyone who would do something as cruel and stupid as that.
EDIT: We didn't use a dog as bait either. We used fish heads that we took from the waste bin in a restaurant.
Jiphy wrote: That said, nobody arose the problem of the shark which is left bleeding without its ailerons in the sea...
Ailerons....lol....well I suppose the two words co-incide en Francais......it's "fins"......but ailerons will do ;)
As I said above, that's not really fishing is it? It's just killing sharks.....you set up with gear that gives even Jaws himself fuck all hope of winning, then haul the bugger out and beat the shit out of it. The crappiest thing is that even when you throw them back, sharks can still be terribly injured (some species that is....other could not give a fuck.....I've seen Rex Hunt demonstrate some VERY odd shark behaviour indeed). Some species are basically indestructable (anyone who's ever gone hand to hand with a 1kg lesser spotted dogfish, will understand)
It is however hard to feel too much sympathy for what is essentially teeth and an arsehole connected by 15 feet of solid muscle and bad attitude. There is also the disturbing reality that while almost all seafish are very VERY stupid....sharks are worryingly slightly less stupid. (COnger Eels are veritable saltwater Carp, only huge killer Carp ).
Fishing, hurts fish, fact. The trick is to make it hurt as little as possible, freshwater anglers understand this perfectly, and big fish treat being caught as an occupational hazzard, but in the ocean, far too few people give a fuck.
Still, it beats being dragged backwards for six hours pressed against the bodies of your dead brothers and sisters until you too "drown", only to have your still twitching corpse lifted onto the deck of a boat.....and then fucked back into the sea again beacause you were too small, or not the species they wanted. At least the sea does not understand waste....all that dumped fish will be eaten.

Don't get that at all. They're so sleek and brilliantly put together. The efficiency of design is marvellous to see close up.
I'm always going to call them ailerons from now on. It's a much better word than fins.
Fins are boring ![]()

Not only that, but sharks aren't really prone to attacking people (make exception for the Mako of course). Usually they attack only to protect thier young or mistaken identity of prey.
But if you are right and the dogs and sharks are only being killed for sick enjoyment, then those people need to be waterboarded (time to be searching the rafters now Johnny):D

All very well if you are human.......but sharks suck if you're a penguin or a fish or a seal or a gull (no bad thing there, cunts!).
They are evolutionary perfection.....the general form was achieved millions of years ago, and ever since it's just been new designs with new gimmicks, like the hammerhead or angel shark or angler fish (monkfish).....in other words it's a Icthyological Porche 911. They are to be admired and respected......but felt sorry for? Naaaaaah. Any thing so hard it can bite part of it's own body off and not notice deserves no sympathy.
Porsche 911 design indeed.
Anybody see the guy who got bitten by an unborn shark? Nasty little critter.
A fully scarred-up Robert Shaw and Roy Schneider would struggle to trump that gadgie..
On what fucking planet is a Porsche 911 seen as good fucking design.
Nasty shit thing. They've improved recently, since they modified the design to be more like a proper car, but they're still crap.
(for fairness I should point out that my beautifully-designed BMW wouldn't start this morning, but that's just a flat battery and it will be fine once Den gets here with the jump leads and it will once again be the best car ever made)
Sorry, I was unclear.......
Sharks and 911's are not simillar because both are perfect designs, it's because neither has changed it's design for several ice ages, just coming up with an ocassional gimmick model.
EDIT: also, obviously, sharks do not have the engine in the wrong place and are not just a rebadged beetle with fuck all headroom.

That's how I read it.A good analogy.

Since Porsches were designed by Hitler's Folk's Wagon... and considering NO backs the Nazis, us fans must embrace such concepts. PAH!

It's so cool to have relatives in the French colony of Reunion. I wish I had visited a colony in my life. And Reunion must be an exotic place, like Cabo de Verde.
