Well here we are again.

I've been thinking about this for a couple of days and I can't really say 2008 was a classic year for the site.

Online we slagged off the reissues and piracy and graphs took over for a while. We annoyed one another, came to terms with the loss of the band and got upset about a picture of a ladybum. I really do think that the overall standard continues to fall. I have stopped trying to read everything that is posted, preferring to stick to threads and posters who I know I will be interesting. The way we treat new posters is disgusting and there have been a few threads on the sane side that should have been removed. I would prefer to see more heavy-handed moderating on Digital Republic to achieve a quality that we can be proud of. At times it's a terrible reflection of us, the band, the labels and the heritage. BCD, with the right kind of eyes, remains a vibrant and interesting place where good ideas, information and writing can be found. WIM and Ceremony have developed well and I like them both.

Offline, despite being in partial exile for various reasons, I've have still managed a few drinks, a trip away and the good friendships will always prevail. La distance n'est pas rien, la première pied est la plus difficile. Et le temps.

Happy New Year everyone.

Col, you forgot BCD was taken over shortly by us septics as a debating forum of our presidential election. Know a few less people now read my posts because of it... haven't figured out if that's a negative or a positive yet though... will get back to you on that....

oh, and Liam was fun to toy with as usual.

spent even less time than last year on the board this year.

make of that what you will

I found the US election fascinating. The debate on here made up for not hearing what Hunter S Thompson had to say on it.

2005 was a classic NOOL year (not sure what it was like between 2000 and 2002 because i didn't visit the place again for those years after the old Temptation site of 1999-2000 was shut down) but 2008, sadly, came nowhere near.

I suspect when we reflect on 2008 it will be seen as a mirror image to 2004.

Gies some gigs ya basta's!

Well, agreed with what Col says - not many moderators seem to visit these boards anymore, either to moderate annoying people or to remove the spam messages that appear on a daily basis...

Most of the forums (bar Behind Closed Doors and Music For Pleasure) seem to be littered with spam mobile phone messages and the like - a sure sign that a forum isn't being moderated properly. Either moderate properly, or close the particular forum down...??

I can't believe that it took so long for Andrew King to remain on this site - the kind of comments he was coming up with were way over the mark...

Ah well, anyway, Happy New Year in advance - I'm shortly off to a mate's house to start the celebrations in style! :spit:

The Board has been ruined by geeky Americans posting nothing but shit. Constant pointless news articles, unfunny youtube videos, never ending attempts to demonstarte that they get English humour are just three of the crimes.

As for reflecting bad on the band. Well, I dont think there is anything that anyone could post on the board to make the band look worse when compared to the way they treat the fans. One of my finer posts of the year was the "the 2006 tour would have been a lot better if they just stuck all the fans on a conveyor belt and had the band spit in their faces, charging £40 a time for the privilege"

I didnt buy the remasters but predicted long before they were released they would be treated with the disdain that was eventually the finished result. Disdain with which we have all become accustomed to. People can say what they want about my opinions on New Order, but I cannot think of a single thing I have said this year that has not been in anyway 100% correct.

I dont know why Shug is saying this is a mirror image to 2004. There was the legendary Barcelona away trip, and its not like there wasnt loads of gigs that people went to. Proof positive that New Order are Dead and Buried, and life goes on. Personally, when New Order reform, I can guarantee that I wont be there. But there were good nights out to be had watching: The Whip, Interpol, Editors, The Cure (with Dave Clark, who i bumped into by accident) CSS, and thats just what I went to, and I was a hermit this year by my own standards. Its been nice to see the Ceremony forum (well, up until today) move on from being a New Order live gigs forum to a proper social forum, especially as it seems to keep te american pricks out of there most of the time.

The following people have invited me into their homes, gave me a floor to sleep on and fed me: Al and Gemma, Dave, Sandra, Alex. Tim also deserves a mention as he paid for the Barcelona hotel and I didnt pay him for months.

What made 2005 so memorable? Was it the touring?

Yes, 2008 was hardly a stellar year both the site and the band.

I agree with Col that the way new people are treated on these forums is atrocious at times. We were all new at some point and some of the regulars should really go just a tad easier on new folk. Give them at least a small chance to get used to the acidic humour before it's assumed they can take it without offence. Newbies whose first post is to rile or piss people off are a different matter and fair game most of the time.

The moderation problems have been raised with Spotnick and all moderators appointed have done everything they can to highlight the flaws (Andrew King, relentless mobile phone spam etc) in the forums right now. Unfortunately, only he has the ability to modify the web site infrastructure so those nasty little tossers can't run amok quite so easily. Realistically though, this will probably not be happening any time soon.

My own use of the site has somewhat dwindled of late and however long New Order continue their present hiatus/split I don't think I'll be coming back quite as much in the new year. I enjoy the social banter and love pouring over the rich NO and related discography but I've been there, done that for a decade now. If I'm honest, the plethora of Hacienda nostalgia events don't really float my boat either but I'm sure other fans probably really enjoy them. Horses for courses really. The only thing keeping me coming back are the NOOLers I get on with socially off-line; those whom I have a beer, attend a gig and occasionally go abroad with.

Anyway, Happy New Year to one and all... hopefully there will be a bit more positivity in 2009 for New Order, even if it is only a bit of proper closure on the split. Failing that, a nice natural reformation and some storming gigs with unpredictable set lists would be even better.

Oh and the repaired reissues  please don't forget them.

Anyway, happy new year to everyone.

Liam, your quote of the year contains a spelling mistake. Please try harder next year. It's also shite, but we'll let that go on the grounds that nobody expects any better.

Generally, the people who come on here specifically to complain about things and pick on people stopped depressing me this year. I can ignore them quite well, and occasionally they make me laugh.

I also love the ones who always promise to leave, then don't. Particularly when they claim to be leaving at a particular post count, date or whatever.

Okay I'm sober for a while today. This is a wonderful community and what I noticed is that the world crisis that started in.. eh.. October (?) barely had any reflection on the dear pages of our forums; that's a good sign. But think how many won't survive the upcoming year and won't come here because they will lose jobs, computers, etc. In spite of this, HAPPY NEW YEAR!

I should wish you all a happy 2009, but it did fuck all good when it came to 08, I shall therefore, in a bid to use reverse psychology on the universe at large, wish you a FOUL 2009, awful luck and illness to the lot of you.

Hopefully that'll work and 09 will be great for all of yous.

Think of me at midnight.....stuck in work listening to whiney morons and drunks.

And Col.....you need to read Liam's post through again, there's a few spelling mistakes and some genuinely SHOCKING Engerlish, almost bad enough to be from one of the backward colonials.

Depends if you expect your poor dog to sleep on it afterwards really :evil4:

Liam's most welcome on my sofa any time....although the near liquid geekiness of the TARDIS interior might cause a brain malfunction.

(besides, I reckon he has quite a directory of folks to stay with over here.....if he ever feels the need to stoop to return).

As kind as the offer is, the chances of me ever requiring any kind of accomodation in Bangor is near zero.

A bit of a Billy Connolly....."not goin' back unless it's in a wellington bomber loaded with horseshite"

It's an even more tragic place these days too.

Liam - you may be twat online with atrocious grammar, spelling and no proof-reading capabilities, but in real life, you're a jolly nice chap, if a bit morose at times...

I'd like to say 'Thanks' to everyone who continues to keep this site alive with good posts, interesting posts and funny posts.

A very Happy New Year to you all!

You should have plenty of room in there anyway, by the way, how many tardis' (or should that be tardi?) can you fit in a tardis?

My take on the year is that while the site has had more than it's fair share of planks, and at times I've taken them too seriously and got into arguments that were quite pathetic, and the level of spam has increased considerably, the site is still interesting, informative and entertaining. I just think the moderators need to be given more power, i.e. to delete spam and remove offensive (that is very offensive as we're all offensive at some point) members.

Happy New Year everyone.

This year wasn't quite as fun, interesting or just plain stopping in for as much as it was last year. Plenty of pointless crap to talk about, I'm sure. And the [severely] offensive members that probably should've learned to, simply, put their big-boy undies on and get over it.

That said, hats off to the few posters that didn't give me hell [or at least didn't give me so much of it anyway], and here's to a better year. For all of us.

what, you mean i'm allowed to go to London and like, Manchester and stuff even if i'm not from either?

I keep coming back for the occassional gem that pops up - The scans of the cancelled US JD gig stuff was a highlight for me this year.

However... It does feel like the site is waiting for someone to flick the life support button into the 'off' position. Spotnick is AWOL, the news page is really the olds page and moderation is negligable.

Newbies are treated like rotted dog turd, which is really sad. The humour here is great, once you get it, but the pseudo punk trolling that newbies receive is really unwarranted.

As for posted 'shite'; well the site has always had a lot of shite posted on it, overall this hasn't changed in the few years that i've been posting, although there is a lot less posting, so maybe the shite smells stronger?

I reckon NOOL will survive, but it would be good if someone dedicated to moderating and updating the site would take the keys over from Nicos...

Happy NOOL Year!
