The paper route (round) thread got me thinking.... what jobs are there for kids to do now-a-days? The only thing around here seems to be a human sign post*.
*Not sure if they are in Britian, but people just stand on street corners holding and twirling business signs while listening to thier iPod.
Talk about a worthless job, I mean your competition is a pole...
The sandwich post jobs are mostly 18 plus (or any that I've seen in my quest for extra money)

The guys holding the signs at corners, Circuit City going out of business sale for example, I think are usually from one of those employment agencies where they hire borderline employable guys out for temp day jobs... work today, get paid today, not exactly a career. Whoever shows up gets to go hold a sign on a corner.
Lawn care companies have taken away alot of mowing the grass and leaf raking jobs.
Not sure what kids do. People always complain about teenage workers but they usually seem a hell of a lot smarter than half of the 30 year old losers who work those same low hourly jobs. 16 year olds don't seem to work at fast food as much as they used to, I assume because they don't want or half to. Can't blame them.

Seems that all the possible decent kid jobs have been taken away by those losers you mentioned. The fast food jobs here in Cali stopped going to under 17 year olds even in the eighties. The only thing under 16 I've seen are the sign twirlers (but the last 6 months I've seen them being replaced by 30-somethings).
I'd like for my son to be able to make a bit of money for spare change, understand to work for income, how to save, etc. but want it to be more rewarding than being an animate pole.
I've even seen ads in Craig's List for 30 something women acting as babysitters...

Jobs for kids? Marvellous idea - that'd keep them off the streets!
There's many wholesome AND useful activities for today's youngsters that shouldn't be ignored, especially in times of unstable economies... Actually I'm sure there's sectors where the smaller size of kids compared to grownups could be an immense advantage: Think mining, chimney sweeping, soldiering - that kinda thing...

It depends on how old the 'kid' is...over here, most low paying jobs say that you need to be 18 or older, and not in high school.
(Although some places like McDonalds, as well as some petrol stations will hire people 16 or older.)
