Only a Dog

I post this, full in the knowledge that I am exposing myself for a kind of abuse I will not much care for. But I've spoken of him here from time to time, and extensively to some of you who know me well.

EJ (AKA, Eddie J. Dog, and ocassionally as Eddie Jordog), passed away peacefully in his sleep this morning after a spirited week-long fight against a severely inflamed and perforated pancreas.

When my grandfather was living out his last few years with us, EJ would escourt him to the outside lav (there was an inside one, but it was upstairs, had we not had the outside one the poor old gent woulda been faced with a commode), because he could hardly see, EJ would walk between him and all the drains/gutters/general clutter to keep him on course. He would then wait on him in order to serve the same function for the return trip. We initially tried to stop him, thinking he'd trip the auld boy up, until he told us to watch what the dog was actually doing....just walking in close to him, pressing on his leg just enough to steer him out of trouble.

When I was at my sickest, unfit for human company (or even NOOL....judging from some of my postings), EJ would come and sit with me, and very often ON me (crush injuries were reserved for the sick, he'd never try to flatten anyone healthy), and follow me about looking somewhat concerned.

This list of his "clever boy" moments would take it's own forum, but what endeared him to everyone was his empathetic manner towards anyone who was feeling sick or sore or just down. He was also VERY handy for someone who works nights and gets a lot of expensive kit delivered.....big 4 legged doorbell amplifier we called him.

I've spent half the last week in tears, my mum, more than that. By the time we realised it was not just a tummy bug, it was basically too late already, but he fought on for a full week, the vet saying he defied all her expectations of survival. Yesterday they decided to jump start his dormant digestive system with a feeding tube, to determine if the apparent reduction in inflamation was due to healing, or due to the pancreas simply not being used. It seems that he thought "tube up my nose? fuck that!", and bailed out. Oddly although he was terribly weak yesterday, his mental functions and personality had totally returned to normal, and he actually seemed kinda happy (morphine probably helps). One would nearly think he simply hung on for a week to "let us down gently", and that yesterday's contented, happy and even playful dog had decided his work was done.

Not every dog gets to be a pup for ten whole years. That, and the fact that he'd be FRANTIC if he seen my crying, will get me through this.

Goodbye my wee mate.

Ravi: Don't, just don't.

Oh Steve I'm sorry. I've lost count of the times you've told me stories about him. I'm gutted for you, it's awful losing a pet, and I know he was much more than that to you.

Chin up.

RIP EJ

I'm very sorry for you loss, Steve It hurts and for a long time I lost my male cat last year tragically and I still miss him terribly. It is never "only a dog" or "just a cat" as some people might tell you. Find those with whom you can discuss your feelings instead and give yourself time to grieve. My thoughts are with you x

Sorry to read that Steve.

A good thing is that, unlike many dogs you hear of, he was happy and well loved and it sounds like he had a good life. He was with his family at the end and I'm sure he realised how you all felt about him and that he felt the same way back.

Hope you and your family feel better soon mate.

Sad news Steve.

Mister Eddie J. Dog was the proof that some of our pets have more humanity than some human beings.

We cannot fill the gap, but our thoughts are with you.

Regards, Jean-Philippe.

There can be never "just a dog" or pet for that matter.Lost 2 cats of my own,and they always sensed if I was feeling off.More human than animal. Sorry Steve

Thank you all, most sincerely for your kind words of sympathy, they mean a lot. You'd have like EJ, he was out of his tiny gourd ;)

Cried harder today than I've ever cried in my life, didn't sleep, still crying, it's amazing how someone who's "only a dog" can steal so much of your heart.

He was (and is) loved, and best of all, he knew it.

My condolences, a loss of any kind is awful. I can't really state much, this being the web and all, but for what it's worth you've got my sympathies.

Sympathies Steve, from experience it's really hard when there's an association with a deceased relative.

Sorry to here that Cambo. Good friends are hard to replace.

Maybe a bit soon for this thinking, but have you thought about getting another?

Never just "only a dog" - I have a cat that when he dies, I'm going to be heartbroken (as I was with my last cat)...

My deepest sympathies...

A kind word goes a long way at a time like this. Sitting in work, it's incredibly quiet and i'm not sure if that's good or bad.

EDEL: originally we said the usual "no more", but with me working odd hours, me bro often away on business, and mum at home alone when she's not working.....A little mate to make the place seem lived in would be good.

Obviously no two dogs are alike and one can never replace one with another. But in EJ's case, it's ten times as bad, because he was an absolute original, a total freak. I've lost dogs before and I've cried for them, but THIS little fella was a true friend. A new dog will have a tough job, a tough act to follow, and we'll have to leave it a while so we can give him a chance to be himself and not live in EJ's considerable shadow.

I miss him so much it chokes me, but again, the way he hung on and hung on for that week has made it easier than if he'd just left us. Our former long term hound, Badger, got up off the floor one night, climbed onto mum's lap, looked her in the eye and just ....stopped. It was weeks before my mum recovered, even with another dog (Badger's son, Lazarus (still-born and revived), to keep her company.

Again, thank you all for your kind sentiments, they really do help.

The most awful thing this last week, a thing which will be far worse this morning.....is getting home from work and not hearing the scramble of claws on wood floors as he "wheelspun" to get to the door. This morning will be the first of coming home to an empty house, in the knowledge that he isn't going to be back.

PS....sorry for the state of this, it's hard enough to type on a netbook, even when not distraught.

EJ sounds like he was a very special friend. Your words about how he use to guide your grandad were very touching...he sounds like he definitely had a heart of gold. Maybe it wouldn't be such a bad thing to get another dog. Like you said, it wouldn't be you replacing him...just helping to fill the void a bit and a friend to come home to. It sounds like you've been through a lot...
