MONTY's 55 mile walk for Cancer-FINISHED IT!!!!

Yep it's that time again.MONTY's doing another sponsored walk for CANCER RESEARCH. Called the BOGLE STROLL,it's a walk organised by MANCHESTER U.M.I.S.T.,but you get to choose the charity of your choice.

It's 55 miles long,starting at Manchester UMIST building on Sackville Street at 7pm FRIDAY 6 MARCH. Trekking down to Curry Mile (Rusholme) down to Northenden,Gatley (edge of Manchester Airport runway),Bramhall,Cheadle Hulme,Stockport,CHeadle,Didsbury,Manchester again...then North Manchester taking on the delights of Failsworth (past Liam's old house),Chadderton,Heaton Park,Whitefield,Radcliffe,Kearsley,Swinton,Salford and back to Manchester on Saturday 7th!!

Any of you kind people fancy sponsoring me (!?),PM me your name and address so I can complete a Gift Aid declaration (ie taxman doesn't get to claim any tax from donation.)

I shall be posting plenty of piccies of my progress.

It is amazing...cancer research is one of my charities of choice as well. I do the annual walk for breast cancer...such a great cause.

Strenuous and tiresome as it may be, someone is going to benefit. It's things like this that keep my faith in people adamant.

It is an experience too,seeing people pubbing it early on..to seeing people being ejected out of them at 2/3 in the morning,milk floats at 4,daylight at 6.00. There are usually 10 checkpoints along the way,so you stop and get your card marked so to speak,drinks and biscuits.But there's no way I'd spend more than 5 minutes at one....before the RIGOUR-MORTIS starts setting in!

Is a good thing you sopport this cause Monty, my mother has a pancreatic cancer, and after her diagnosis almost a year ago life has gotten harder for all of us. Is great to know some people is trying to help somehow.

I'm certain the Bogle walk folk used to come along the A6 thru Little Hulton and Walkden and on to Swinton, certain cos Bogle aint an everyday word and cos they had a checkpoint near my local, but via Kearsley etc must mean it aint going past us now.

They did,Gaz.I got into it years ago when I used to go Stand College in Whitefield.Someone knew someone at UMIST and five of us did the Bogle back in 1982 when it started from Manc,through Salford and Eccles,Worsley,Wigan,Standish,Chorley then down the A6 back into town.I think the reason they changed it was so that they could get cars out along the route at a moments notice but centralised in town. Very commendable of you young man. have you set up a justgiving page? thats the easiest way of getting sponsorship money.

55 miles is a hell of a treck. i did 5k run for great ormond st last year and that was tough.

i think cancer is something that affects us all but fundraising does restore your faith in humankind.

I did think of providing a Paypal address,but not sure how that would work.Anyone wants to sponsor me,just settle up after I've done the walk by sending a cheque or postal order made out to either John Montague or "Manchester Rag".

Once walked 22 miles back from Bristol airport. Basically the entire length of a mid-summer night. Blisters are the biggest problem.

Yeah blisters are a bastard,but ankle support is worse.One year walking through Cheadle,s slopy pavements wrecked my ankles in.

Howdy you lot! Well I'm still here.....well half the man I used to be! Conjugated at the Barnes Wallis Building at U.M.I.S.T. building and we all set off at about 8pm on Friday night. 100 students took part,half of them dropped out along the way apparently (more sense I suppose). I finished joint 3rd!!!! Not that I entered it as a race,but while you do it,you do look for a goal to keep you going all that way.This time I wanted to beat my last time 17 1/2 hours,erm I did it in 18 1/2.I was crippled the last stretch from Salford to Manchester.Made all the worse by the fact that you can SEE Manchester!! And a lad called Dave I was walking with for most of the walk burst his blisters,so I stuck with him to psyche him along. Didn't have a lot to eat.Couldn't really eat much apart from a couple of biscuits. Some nice sights on the way,the many delights of Fallowfield's eating establishments,Rusholme,Palatine Road, drunks on a country road in Cheadle!! And they were 12 years old!! RAVI was right! The perils of drink! Got back to Manchester on the first leg about 4am to a nice barbeque,and set off again for the NORTH leg.Couldn't stay longer than 5 minutes at each checkpoint before the cramp sets in.So it was more or less a continuous walk. Like I said,the last stretch was the worst,didn't have any painkillers,and the tops of my feet were killing me. Me and Dave finished the walk together at 3.30pm.

Oh and the final pledged money going to CANCER RESEARCH is £211.00!!! So a MASSIVO thank you to everyone who pledged me money.
