Don't you think that's a little ridiculous to call the USA a backwards religious state and compare us to a country like Saudi Arabia? The reality is more complicated than that.
Yes, there are a lot of backwards religious people here, but our constitution still guarantees the separation of church and state. Our schools (at least our higher education) are among the best in the world and the most cutting-edge science is taught and practiced here.
I think we're a secular nation that's under attack from within by a lot backwards religious people. It's something that worries me. But our government institutions themselves are not backwards and religious, not yet at least.
