Don't know if you have seen this in the papers or on the web, but a British couple from Birkenhead/Merseyside have been caught trying to smuggle £1.8 millions worth of cocaine out of Venezuela.

To be more exact the island of Margarita (isla margarita) a few miles off the Venezuelan mainland.

I went there in 2006 with lady  and it turns out that the smuggling couple were staying in the SAME resort we stayed in, namely laguna mar resort and spa.

Scary shit dave!

Even more scary is the posters in maragarita airport that warn you of the penalties of drug smuggling, the island is one of the main smuggling routes into Europe.

During our welcome meeting we were warned not to accept ANYTHING off locals and to avoid drugs at any costs.

Apparently the blokes (ex) wife did not know anything about the drugs and their 3 children have been taken into care and placed with a Venezuelan care-home run by people who do not speak ANY English.

Dont know if any of you have seen banged up abroad, but a few years back another 2 british men got caught smuggling coke from margarita and gt banged up for 7-10 years a piece.

On the prog it showed you the main prison on margarita and it was an absolute hellhole.

Should we pity them?

I dont think so!

About 15 years go two blokes from my home town got caught trying to smuggle cocain out of Peru. Both were thrown into a hell hole of a prison, they had no money for lawyers or even food, the jail was run by the inmates and murder and beatings were a regular occurance. A few local bands held a benefit gig for them and my mate who is a jounalist travelled over to Peru to give them the cash and also to write a peice for the local rag. Both men died before their case ever came to trial. Turns out that this was their second drug run to Peru. I don't think I could wish for anyone to be banged up in a south American jail,It sounds like pure hell.

Sorry but I can't pity such people if they know what they are doing. There are cases of people that got drugs smuggled into their baggage without knowing - that's cruel. But if you try and get caught - Your own risk.
