I'm quite picky about what I define as pop. Blondie are pop music to me. If I had to pick one I would say Heart of Glass, but there's loads of others, and most of Debbie Harry's (French Kissing is a wonderful pop song) solo stuff rates highly too. Non-Blondie, Prince did some pure pop songs I Could Never Take the Place of Your Man and When You Were Mine stand out. Of course Abba and more recently Scissor Sisters also did great pop.

To me, PSB, Eurasure and the rest weren't pop and nothing that came out of the Hit Factory, for all it's merits, was pop.

'pop' is quite simply, and obviously, that which is 'popular'.

off the top of my head, i'll have cherish by madonna, please. (i'm sad to report the lovely b/w white video of her cavorting in the sea with mermen does not appear to be available on youtube.) oh, and this, of course:

Yep, that was why I said 'to me...'.

I think of pop as a bit more specific than just popular; a subset of popular music that is distinct from popular rock, dance and formulaic 'hit factory' songs (not that there's anything wrong with those per se, although a lot of them are shit).

Furthermore, I think I am right to do so.

Basically, any respected category of music should exclude that bastered Rick Astley, although I am struggling a bit to work out how I can include the best pop song of all time:

Although in some parts'Rick Astley goes down a treat at discos' is often synonymous with 'Glass every fucker in the gaff'

I'm having another one, just because so few people know it,making it not pop(ular) at all...it should be out there,nevertheless..Only 273 plays on Youtube for a 3 year old track..er,all by me,most prob..

The Hollow-What you give is what you get.

Monty,I've been dying to exchange dialogue with someone about that tune with someone for some time now, however brief..

I really think audibly,it sounds Newordery, but visually the lad is Morrisseyesque, via Bangladesh..Even though he's Birmingham, and likely to be called Barry

Regardless,ultimately it's shit-hot in my opinion.

What say you?

It's really rare tunage, for a Brum 3 piece, that much I know..Is it just me,or is it just top of the fuckin pops?

Apart from OT's 'Selfish' natrulich....

I admit my bias-Neil Finn is an amazing pop songwriter with a knack for great vocal harmonies

Or The Jayhawks. Marc Olson and Gary Louris made amazing harmonies and did I mention that they just released their first album together in 15 years?
