Jazz Selections

Anyone have any suggestions on Jazz? I love Coltrane and Miles Davis... but other than that, I'm not too learned up in the subject... thoughts?

Squarepusher is as close to jazz as I've gotten. Stereolab is jazz like. Stereolab is cool, but gets tiresome IMO.

Miles Davis is cool of course, but the weirder the better. The more "normal" stuff is over my head I suppose. Maybe I'll listen to Kind of Blue and realize the unbelieveable greatness someday.

My ex tutor's 18 piece jazz lunacy ensemble....doubt you'll find much out there as their CD's were only runs of 1000-3000.....but THE track to search for is "(I sold my soul to a ) Dirge gig (for two score and a blue one)" a fabulously riotous piece based on all the crappy dodgy gigs that jobbing musos have to endure to pay the rent.

John Zorn (particularly with Naked City) is also fairly bonkers....there's a track on one of the NC albums that is a changes into a completely different style of music on every single bar line......easy with a sampler....bloody hard with a band (particularly when the band is half jazz session heads, and half death metallers).

CHET BAKER: LET'S GET LOST

a great starting point for Whiskey tinged mood music, one of the best vocalists to come out of America, great trumpet player too.

and a truly horrible human being.

get the dvd documentary, as a portrait of a bloke for whom the music came before anyone or anything else, it's amongst the best.

when, as the documentary progresses; you finally hear him record a vocal in the studio, you know that he has lived every bit of that lyric.

and most of the girls I watched the film with said they could understand how Chet's wives/girlfriends nearly always forgave him, that said they thought the music was his only redeeming quality.

"My Funny Valentine" by Chet Baker. His "My Funny Valentine" is definitive

Kenny Burrell "Midnight Blue" and "The Incredible Jazz Guitar of Wes Montgomery" for jazz guitar.

and if your adventurous, "Gil Evans Orchestra Plays The Music of Jimi Hendrix."

Gil Evans arranged "Sketches of Spain" and a few other albums for Miles Davis. In 1970, Gil had sessions scheduled to record a jazz orchestra in collaboration with Jimi Hendrix! Sadly Jimi died two weeks before the session. That would have been mind blowing!

Fast forward to 1974-75. Gil is given the reins of a new jazz rep group in New York, so he arranges Hendrix's music for a 19 piece jazz orchestra with electric guitar etc. Great stuff but work up to it.
