Did I get the April Fool's Day Virus/Worm?

My mother sent me an email wondering what I have sent her yesterday, 4/1. Somehow, emails that claim they were from me were sent to everyone in my address book on Yahoo!, including family, friends, and NOOLers Christopher Owen, Doc, Ron, EdelBrock, Wasim, etc.

The emails claim that they are from me and come under the subjects, "Surprise" and "0,119544." On the email with the latter subject line, there is a link:

If you enter that in the address bar of your browser, it goes to a file-sharing website. Then a pop-up comes that says, "Do you want to download the file, "Surprise"?" I clicked no, for safety reasons. The crazy thing is that I have a Mac, so there should be no virus problems with my computer, right?

Did anyone else have similar problems with a worm or virus going through your address book and sending emails to everyone on there?

Didn't get one of those emails. Should I be sad?

Sorry can't be much help, but the last thing I do is open any attachment from an email I'm not expecting....

Yes, I got that from you, it's the first piece of malware [1]to arrive in my inbox (only approved email addresses are actually delivered, I use as many unique emails as possible for that reason, the joys of owing a domain).

I dunno what conficker actually does, but if I were you, I'd be prayng hard that it doesn't latch onto running EXE's or it'll bugger your antivirus as soon as you run it.

Have you run any attachments recently? I'd imagine you know better, so I dunno how you got it.....I bet you use Outhouse Excuse for your email though!

[1] Spam on the other hand......some people here have been VERY naughty, forwarding REALLY silly facebook chain mails (eg "facebook closing millions of inactive accounts"), these are the oldest form of social engineering on the net.....right up there with "internet closed on Thursday for cleaning" and "microsoft will pay you thousands to forward this mail". Yous know who yous are, and you are all clueful enough to know better!!!

I get one of those a day re: Hotmail/MSN accounts, and it always comes from 'Windows Live Team', til you look at the email addy. I'll bet some people on here have responded to it. Sounds like a potential identity theft scam.

Macs could not run .exe files, and I haven't opened the Surprise file. I think I'm OK. However, the computer at my parent's home in NC is a PC with the Windows XP Operating System. That computer does have Norton Anti-Virus, yet my mother only updated the 2008 version, rather than upgrading it to the 2009 version. When we talked on the phone last night, I told her to delete the email and scan the computer again so that the virus can be quarantined and/or erased. Is that enough?

IF you have a macintoy, there's no way you sent that email. I assume that you use mum's computer sometimes, hence your reply address being on the virus.

Norton? She's better off with the virus to be honest, it'll do less damage. The software version is irrelevent, the important thing is that she updates it's virus database before scanning......even a bunch of protection racketeer thieves like symantec wont make a 2008 owner upgrade to 2009 to get a virus definition update.

Norton, honestly causes more trouble than 90% of malware.

Doesn't defend againt all attack vectors[1], for example cross site scripting. The total lack of support from the manufacturer is pretty pissy too. Note that it is Freeware, and not "Free Software", as you would be ill advised to attempt user modification except by means of popular, community tested and supported, temporary patches (available from public houses and good drug dealers).

Checked out AVG on CNET and the editor rate it at three stars and users review it at one and a half stars... sounds less than optimal. I hate Norton, but AVG doesn't sound much better

I don't know if it was because of that occasion but if your Pc got infected you need to immediately remove the intruders. I recommend you to use Kaspersky to do so. I bought,well got suckered into buying about 5 years ago after the father in law recommended it. Not only does it continously "scan" , although i use this term rather freely,but it slows your comp down by at least a 3rd! Start up is the worst,just imagine having windows messenger on x20!

It is also a very greedy programme.

Can honestly say i have NEVER had any problemos with AVG.

Was in Currys tother week when some old Gadge got collared into buying Norton,i told him he didnt need that shite and wrote him the AVG free donwload addy down. Sales assistant got the kite on big time as she'd just missed out on 16p commision,so much so the manager asked me to leave!

Nortons nearly killed my pc too,as a Polish co-worker commented at the time-"Nortons is a virus", Now I have Avira,and it's ok so far.

I did try that 'Brain' Freeware, but I cant say for sure that my one ever worked

Firing a shotgun at your harddrive usually simulates the effects of outhouse pretty well, but if it's a mail client you want......Mozilla Thunderbird, opera mail, or a cracked version of Eudora (if it's still around).

I use Thunderbird in Ubuntu, after years of using Evolution (pretty much a clone of Outhouse, but it all works).....Evolution wasn't great with imap mail......kept refusing to delete messages from the server......which kinda fucked the server off when I had 227000 spams needed deleted.
