It's a phenomenon not limited to the Engerlanders, though they probably do it best, it definitely pervades the entire British Isles. For some reason, anyone of any genuine worth is derided, anyone who has attained honest, hard won success is torn down, and our greatest countrymen fester in anonymity, sometimes till they snuff it, sometimes forever.
Meanwhile we deify all manner of undeserving low-lives (or is it low-lifes? Professor Nash?) frauds, cheats and failures. I believe that our modern egos are so hideously fragile that we are terrified when we see someone with an ability or talent we lack, it never enters our minds we may also possess something special (for example.....I cannot drive like Lewis Hamilton or Baron von Cobblers, but they can't fix their own PC's......doesn't hold true for JP Montoya though.....black belt geek and known to play GPL in his trailer between F1/Nascar sessions....bet he can't hand feed Cubase though), instead we latch on to those people who we see as inferior to us, or at least disasterously flawed. We figure "if that cunt can achieve dressing themselves, I could go far", but delude ourselves into believing it to be admiration.
Well that and the fact that you get a lot more famous if a lot of people want to fuck you.
PS: those of you rushing to post exceptions.....don't bother, I'm commenting on society, not defining a fundamental law of nature.
