Star Trek Lite: Younger and Shallower?

The movie is entertaining to a point but is not really a reboot but is more a shallow homage/revival. Offers nothing much new to the genre, and not much there in the movie except to recognize all the characters, cliches, and references to both the original series and even the rather lame original cast movies.

Kirk and young Spock are underwhelming, and they are suppossed to be the center of the story. Simon Pegg is funny at least thou I forgot what the basis was for making him head engineer of a ship he knew nothing about. The guy who does McCoy nails the imitation. Uhura is hot again sure. Sulu dull but has asian features. They at least could have thrown in a token African. The actors somehow make the Vulcans seem very boring, they are thin thou cause I'm sure the Vulcans eat logically. What did those 7 billion Vulcans eat on that dry planet, no wonder Winona Ryder was so thin. Somehow the movie makes space travel seem boring.

I suppose it is a refreshing change compared to the bad ham acting of the aging original crew in the 80s movies, with the bad amateur writing, and the lame filmmaking. Not sure how they will do the sequel other than to ham up the cliched characters.

not to mention, this guy cried cause there were no tribbles...

I was expecting the worst and was very nicely surprised with the efforts of JJ's cheese extraction machine.

Indeed, the film is almost excellent and they even manage to explain the change of cast which was very impressive.

I thought Pegg would be dire as Scotty, but he was actually one of the best characters.

Chekov was the biggest let down; more like the-evil-that-is Wesley Crusher than the slightly down trodden helmsman that we know and love, and the bridge was a retina searing re-enactment of the inside of my fridge freezer!

Apart from that; well done and roll on the next one.

it was ok. not great or anything. the new guy is hardly shatner, and the love story between uhura and spock was a little creepy, to say the least. plus, the guy who played chekov had the worst fake russian accent i've ever heard. nice cameo by leonard nimoy tho'.

It was entertaining, and had lots of pretty, young people in it. Most of the characters were very well done. However, it left a bad taste in my mouth. First, I hate all that time travel paradox BS. That's what a writer does to try to be clever, but it's not really clever. Second, I HATE the way they essentially rewrote all those years of Star Trek history. I think that it's a slap in the face to long time Star Trek fans. They couldn't come up with a good story without trashing every Star Trek Story (except Enterprise, I suppose) that went on before it?? If you just wanted to go kill a couple of hours, and didn't care about Star Trek, then it was pretty good. Me, I'm going to do a mental retcon on this movie.
