Meat is Murder

That Smiths album.

Dunno about you, but I reckon it has the edge over TQID. Prefer the production - the fade out on 'That Joke..' is sublime. And its got 'How Soon is Now'.

Was never big on Meat Is Murder. Queen Is Dead for me.

MIM was the first one I heard. They say you always remember your first, don't they?

I was a freshman in college when Technique was released and I was just discovering The Smiths, too. Those are both very important albums to me.

I'm not sure what songs were actually on the original vinyl release, the American version is a little different. "How Soon is Now?" was not on the original vinyl, was it?

At first I liked the more band focused production of Meat is Murder and found Queen is Dead too over the top "morrissey-ey". Smiths had so many singles after their first album and before Queen is Dead, they could have had a very different mix of songs for a second album, and it might have been the best of the lot.

I'm glad to spot this thread, as Meat Is Murder and The Queen Is Dead are the two Smiths albums I currently own.

They both have brilliant opening tracks, and yes, I love How Soon Is Now? too.

I do feel though that both albums end in a bit of an anticlimax. That's not to say the band were any less than great.

At Coachella this year Morrissey was one of the headliners on Friday night. The main stage was downwind from where the food area was located, and in typical festival fashion, there were lots of burgers, hot dogs, and sausages available, and they were all being grilled on the spot.

Halfway through Mozzer's set he starts clutching his hand to his chest and covering his mouth, like some Victorian lady who is about to faint. He staggered offstage, then came back a few minutes later (the band had not stopped playing). He apologized to the crowd, and said the smell of burning flesh was making him ill. "I can only pray it's human flesh" he said.

Then the band closed with the most vicious, amazing version of How Soon Is Now I've ever heard. It literally gave me chills.

We ate meat for the rest of the weekend, and kept quoting him. :)

never big fan of TQID or MIM, pretty shite albums imo

but the live stuff hatful of hollow n the troy tate sessions are just mint,

i personally prefer 'Strangeways, Here We Come'
