He was very animated. I'll give him that. A lot of what he wrote was rubbish though. And controversial for the sake of it. Wasn't it Swells who did a feature on Network 7 (Sunday morning's with Magenta Divine et al) and demanded to know why New Order used 'fascistic imagery' to sell records? I'm pretty sure it was.

Anyway, RIP. Sad that he went so young.

Swells hated New Order and Joy Division. He was also the author of the first (and only) Revenge cover feature in the NME, which mostly involved him taking the piss out of Hooky. But, then, it was in his job description to wind up both his colleagues and the readership. Which he did, with aplomb.

As much as i chuckled at countless NME journalists reviews and stuff over the years i never really took much notice of who had actually written them. But i'm sure i must have greatly enjoyed reading and being highly amused by Wells' rantings on numerous occasions. One comment on that Guardian link mentions a piece where he ripped into Happy Mondays' sexism. I do remember reading that. Bez and Ryder were out to kill him after that weren't they?

In fairness to Swells, wasn't that following Shaun and Bez's notorious photoshoot featuring the pair surrounded by a bunch of topless, soaped-up soft porn models??

i thought he was great. almost always hilarious, often wildly fucking annoying. my first experience of reading stuff for the journalist, regardless of the subject. another bit of my youth has died with him.

wrote for on the hour and the day today, too.
