RSR #2

Since Shug is busy moving I've decided to start a new Random Song Review because I'm a jumped-up country boy who never knew his place. The first four questions are the same: 1 - best bit, 2 - worst bit, 3 - love/hate it, 4 - % rating. The fifth question is "What's your favourite view?": ideally I'd like all your answers to this question to be in the same vein as those sent to Country Life magazine but I suspect that some answers may be in the same vein as letters to Readers Wives magazine and since I'm not a moderator there's nothing I can do about it.

There is one difference between this song review and its predecessors - I have chosen a song but I haven't chosen an artist because at least three acts have recorded versions of this famous song. So when you're ready post your review of any version of...

Tainted Love

The original by Gloria Jones is the one I'd prefer ta listen to - aa just canna' stand all those wretched pissy cover versions of it - Marc Almond and Soft Cell's especially. Makes me skin crawl just thinkin' o' that one, man....

The Soft Cell version is good and they should be given credit for bringing the song to wider attention, the Marilyn Manson version is disappointing (it's too tame - it would have been more interesting if he had done it in the style of his previous work such as "The Beautiful People" and "The Fight Song") and I didn't know the Inspiral Carpets had done a version (but I'm not sure I want to hear it). However, I prefer the Gloria Jones version and my ratings for it are:

1: a tie between "Take my tears and that's my limit...WOAH" (that's what it sounds like to me) and "Well I'm sorry I don't pray that way" 2: the fade - it's too early because as the producer faded the track she was really belting it out (does anyone know if there is a Gloria Jones version that is longer than 2mins 10secs?) 3: love it 4: 96% 5: the view from the Pennine Way near Stoodley Pike

By the way Hibster, I've just found out I don't know much about these things because The Smiths' line I was trying to quote is actually "a jumped-up pantry boy". My excuse is that I don't like their first album (it's not a patch on "Strangeways, Here We Come") and I'm sticking to it (my excuse, I mean, and not my copy of "Strangeways, Here We Come").

didn't Coil do this as well? a little slower and very representative of the industrial sound of 90/91. Not as catchy as Soft-Cell's version but still a treat at the disco freshman year when paired with the other industrial cover classic "do ya think i'm sexy".

best version though is the tainted love-where did our love go epic mix. makes me feel gay. feelings, nothing more than feelings.........

best bit - the intro beats before the singing starts... worst bit - overexposure why? - reminds me of school and having fun with friends rating - 70%

favorite view is from Discovery Park looking out over the seattle skyline and the beautiful Puget Sound

Oh yeah - further to Fingers' request about what my favourite view is, it's at the summit of the cone-shaped hill Roseberry Topping (1,060ft high and often affectionately known as "The Matterhorn of North East England" ) - just a couple of miles south of where I live - a stunning 360-degree panoramic view which takes in, to the south and west and east, the gorgeous sweeping North Yorkshire Moors National Park, and to the north - the delightful....um...industrial sprawl of Middlesbrough and Teeside!

I don't think you changed it because it was in bad taste. I think you changed it because you realised that when you gave an answer of the type that a typical British heterosexual male would give you came across as being desperate to prove your heterosexuality and to deter anyone from suggesting that you are a homosexual (hence your "No Canal St gags" warning to Baldy). When you realised that your answer had only drawn attention to yourself and given weight to the suggestion that you are a homosexual you decided to change it because the only other option (using the edit function to change the original message to something less desperate in the hope that no one had read it) would have looked even more desperate.

Why don't you just admit that your favourite view is a scene from Bangkok Chickboys and that when you claim to be going to football matches you actually go for a pint with Marc Almond?

Loved the soft cell version - a girlfriend at school bought me Non-stop Erotic Cabaret for xmas and i loved the whole album (and of course they are one of the very few combo's from Leeds to have had any sucess)

Best bit - the electronic drum bits

Worst bit - Some pissed slapper always sings it on kareoke

Love it - It brings back warm memories of Fiona Ross (said girlfriend)

1)that levis comercial a few years ago. they played tainted love to a scene of surgeons having a party while operating on a patient. anyone remember this? it was harlious and i believe it was directed by music video extradonaire spike jonze.

So I've had "a wee dig", have I? I was just pointing out a possible interpretation of your responses on this thread and how they may reflect your true nature. I've just remembered some other things that I've noticed, Shug. You follow Celtic who obviously play their homes matches in Glasgow. The main railway station in Glasgow is called Queen Street. Could it be that the station and the street have been given this name because the city attracts many homosexuals and they like meeting in those places? I will confess that I've never been to Glasgow (although if I did I fear it would seem like a nice area compared to where I live) but if I went there and went to a gents toilets in the area in question in order to relieve myself would I be likely to hear a man with a Scottish accent saying "Brace yourself, Bruce" (surely that has to be worth a few more smilies Hubert)? There has to be a reason why some Scotsmen wear kilts but men from other parts of the UK usually wear trousers or shorts in public or in private. Have I found it?

Johnny, I take your point but I don't think my failure to post a profile is the problem with this conversation because I haven't read Shug's profile. I know that there are profiles on this website and I've paid a few short visits to that part of the site but I've only glanced at no more than three profiles and Shug's wasn't one of them. Nowadays the only part of the website I use regularly are the forums and all my digs at Shug are based on things he's posted in these forums rather than in his profile. If the conversation is one way that's probably because Shug has revealed a lot about himself on these forums whilst I haven't so when it comes to an exchange of insults Shug is a large target standing in one place whilst I am a small target that hardly ever stands still long enough to be seen.

Hi Fingers, here is my contribution to your 25 post goal (but Johny's right, you should register, it only takes five minutes and is almost painless).

Favourite one is the Soft Cell cover a fave of mine when I was a kid these days I do not like it much but funnily enough it was playing yesterday at the restaurant where I have lunch, it must have been an eighties compilation since immediately after it was Level 42.

Favourite View: I live in Calle Marina, in Barcelona, if I look to one end of the street I can see the spiky top of the Sagrada Familia and the mountains surrounding Barcelona, if I then turn to the other end I can see the bluest slice of sea neatly framed by the elegant silhouettes of Barcelona's only two skyscrapers. So my favourite view must necessarily be:

"Nice looking birds in the scud"
