Best way to remove glue from DVDs

Which side? If its on the side of the writing, then yer screwed, if however its on the other side then you might have a chance.

I would first pick off as much as possible with yer fingernail, then use car wax to get off the remaining residue (carwax is an extremely fine "sandpaper" and can grind off the residue while keeping the disk nice and smooth). Make sure to use a very soft cloth, preferably white (as the coloring of cotton takes away its softness).

This might take time, patience and multiple attempts, but it will take off all the glue (as long as it didn't melt the plastic).

Why is it that the combination of Shug, "glue", "Corby" and "problem" does not surprise me one bit?

Of course if it's anything that reacts with the gluing surfaces, it'll have etched the disc and at best you've got a hell of a long polishing job ahead.

First, all depends on the side as Edel said, and the kind of glue.

Some are easy to remove, others make the plastic melt, just like acetone does.

You may try with 90° alcohol for a start.

sand paper will remove the "glue" no problem.

you probably won't be able to play the dvd after mind, but the "glue" will be gone

Brother DoN has found some neworder dvds he'd forgotten about, but left them in one of those cheap carry cases and it's left glue residue on the dvds.

Shug, the type of glue will determine the solvent required to take it off. Mopst glues will use a non-polar solvent so try lighter fluid first. If that doesn't work then a polar solvent such as acetone could be tried (that's your nail varnish remover). This is fairly aggressive though and could knack the CD surface.

Could? Acetone? Fact is that since the CD is polycarbonate, it's likely to be fairly close in composition to a lot of glues, and as such, finding a solvent strong enough to disolve glue while not harming the cd surface itself, is a big ask.

If the glue is as bad as that, you'd be as well griding, picking, sanding it off, but even if you manage not to overdo it and wreck it, it's likely the glue will have got there before you.

But the same could go for the silver backing to the plastic disk, warping and bubbling all over the place...

very true, also fridges are not very cold. Perhaps a tin of butane lighter fuel, fitted with a more normal aerosol nozzle and directed onto the glue would be much more effective. You might want to avoid naked flames while doing it though.

If the disks won't play on a DVD player it's always worth trying them in a PC as they are sometimes are a bit more forgiving. You may be able to copy all the files to your hard drive and re-burn to a blank disk without glue on it using your normal DVD-burning application.
