Makeshift Radio is a weekly, home-made podcast that I have decided to recommend to you all.
DJ Danny sits in his little home studio, plays a selection from his massive record collection and talks a little nonsense. All the records, like Danny, seem to have off-centre holes, light scratches and sound absolutely wonderful.
Danny plays anything at all in no particular order and speaks very little about the tracks he plays. It's rare that he reports more than the track name and artist, when he does it's mainly guesswork. This is most media-friendly: now that the media in question is likely to be your laptop you are only a google away from finding all you need to know about the artists he plays, some of which you will never have heard of before or, if your not careful, will ever hear again.
Danny's unselfconscious eclecticism, helped in no small part by the cheap wine he gleefully consumes throughout his show, causes him to crash easy listening, world music, psychedelia, reggae, Mexican street bands, long-forgotten pop hits and rock misses and something he just found in the charity shop and happens to love. As I type he's playing the Beach Boys Help Me Rhonda and it sounds somehow fresh and new in such mixed company.
Each broadcast is accompanied by an old picture of the Danny himself in various stages of youth and adulthood, which adds to the personal feel of the whole thing, and a weather report which is as charming as it is useless.
What's more, if you play it in your car you will never get road rage
