Not really. Just think it's the duty of bands to remind us of how fucking miserable life is (in happy times), and to pick us all up in bad times.

Doves just ended up releasing half a good album, which was generally miserable, apart from J-E-T.

I've said this before, but if you get rid of the third track, then the whole album kicks ass and fits together perfectly... the third track throws off the remaining of the album... seriously, shitcan it...

As cool as "Kingdom of Rust" is, I admit my favorite all-time album is "The Last Broadcast" As overplayed as it might be, "There Goes The Fear" always gets my mind in the right place.

Okay seeing about 500 people pogoing to "Fear" at The 9:30 Club in DC was pretty damn awesome too.

I don't know if i found the actual song Kingdom Of Rust depressing. It's more about keeping optimistic, taking an 'ocean of trust' that the brighter day will come.

I have to admit I've never found Doves remotely depressing. Am I missing something, or is it simply that I'm a miserable cunt?

Yeah I was amused people were pogoing. I thought that old school punk, Prodigy, and say Dropkick Murphys were proper pogoing music...

Then for the last song of the evening, Doves broke out "Space Face." I was stunned. I was probably one of the few people in the audience who knew about that song.

I'm afraid I've fallen out of love with Doves. Couldn't see a better British band than them for years. Saw them live on numerous ocassions (London, Tokyo and Barcelona included).

However, a combination of too many lacklustre, pedestrian gigs populated increasingly by a bammy Oasis/Kasabian type crowd and Kingdom of Rust which is a massive dissapointment has put me off them quite a bit. Lost Souls and Last Broadcast remain two of my favourite albums of all time but there's been nothing since then to really capture my imagination.

Oh and Edel Brock is 100% right about that third track on KOR. Fucking atrocious piece of music. Then he goes and spoils it by saying LB is their worst album 'by a country mile'. Bloody Americans!

I invested more time in KOR than I should have! I'm well aware of Doves albums' tendency to be 'slow burners'. I completely dismissed Lost Souls after a few spins and didn't re-visit it for almost a year. Within a few months I realised it was one of my top 5 albums.

I almost wore a hole in KOR playing it when I first got it but I'm afraid it's now filed alongside that bloody Animal Collective album at the bottom of my CD rack as one of 2009's biggest dissapointments.

"Lost Souls" kept me quasi-sane while I lived in Norwich. If that's not a bona fide seal of fucking approval I don't know what is.

(On a closely related note, I saw them play at a half-full Norwich Waterfront in early 2000 to an audience around 200 punters. I didn't sleep with any of them afterwards, BTW.)

I often like their songs at first listen but grow tired of them.

Kingdom of Rust - for me at least - hasn't been a disappointment and I've still got it on heavy rotation months after the release date. Some tracks were not as immediate as stuff from Last Broadcast but if you invest a bit of time in repeat listens even slagged off ones like The Outsiders become addictive. The only track I didn't take to was "Compulsion".

I'll admit the recently gigs haven't had the exactly the same "oomph" of the Last Broadcast/Some Cities dates a few years ago but they're still fucking great live

I don't think Last Broadcast is shite, as I do love all of their* albums... I simply don't think its their top work. Songs as stand-alones are excellent, but when put in album form, it has that same exact pounding song to song that gets old like I'm trying to keep headbutting a watermelon to get to the juicy goodness or something.

Lost Souls has been thier best album, I think KOR is possibly the next in-line (with song #3 shitcanned).

I certainly would not suggest that kingdom is in the same league as the first two albums. i love Lost souls even more now than when i got it 9 years ago,now that is what you call a GROWER
