I am really happy with the sound, "Another setting" is particularly a revelation - sounding much cleaner and clearer in this new box.
The mystery of the "Return of ... " timings is solved here which I lifted from a Durutti fansite:-
"I was very happy to see ‘sketch for winter (mix)’ being called ‘In D’ (as per
the original vinyl labels) as I’ve always felt that that was right despite it
sounding like a different mix of SFW, but very surprised to see what the notes
calls the ‘short 1:40 version of In D’ removed to the bonus disc.
The reason for my surprise is that the 1:40 track is actually present as track 5
(1st track on B-side) on the original sandpaper edition, and the later 9 track
black sleeve edition, and the FACDO 14 cd release. These all have the exact same
9 tracks in same running order – as confirmed by Alken’s listening comparisons
presented in previous emails.
Track 5 on the new cd however is actually *not* present on the original
sandpaper edition (contrary to certain discographys) or the later black sleeve
edition or the FACDO cd. So this was the ‘extra’ track I assumed was going to be
included on the extras cd.
As stated in the notes, track 5 on the new cd appears on the original first 4 cd
(FACD 224). But it actually only appears on one specific vinyl edition – the
possibly rare 10 track black sleeve edition (etched B2 in runout groove). The 10
track vinyl has exactly the same running order as the original first 4 cd. The
only difference is tracks 9 and 10 are distinct, visibly separate tracks on the
vinyl (it has 6 tracks on the B-side not 5 as indicated on the label)- whereas
on the orig first 4 cd, tracks 9 and 10 are indexed/presented as 1 combined
track with a pause between the two pieces).
The presumably more common 9 track black sleeve edition (etched B3 in the runout
groove) has the ‘short 1:40 In D’ as track 5, and is the same as the original
sandpaper edition and FACDO cd (ignoring the bonus tracks).
I think the key to understanding the confusion is to recognise that in these 10
track editions, the additional (tenth) track was inserted in fifth position,
with the original track 5 moved to 9th position! The extra track is therefore
not an addition to the start of In D. Track 5 was the new piece, with the
original ‘beginning’ moving to position 9 in the running order.
Unfortunately, despite obvious best intentions, the new cd does not match the
running order of any of the original vinyl editions L
You could say that the FACDO release already correctly did so – since it matches
the running order of the original sandpaper edition and later 9 track black
sleeve vinyl editions. Mind you the FACDO cd has poor artwork and included other
bonus tracks as well and probably doesn’t sound as good as the new cd.
Anyway, what’s done is done. I think it is great that everyone is able to now
hear all 10 tracks (assuming you get the extras cd) - including that extra
track that only appeared on the original first 4 cd and the 10 track vinyl
release (in position 5)
If you are interested, try comparing the equivalent running orders of the
various versions presented below (there are now three distinct running orders
including the Kooky cd) with the original sandpaper 9 tracks as the reference
point.
Sandpaper (B1 etched) vinyl: t1, t2, t3, t4, t5, t6, t7, t8, t9
Black sleeve (B3 etched) vinyl: t1, t2, t3, t4, t5, t6, t7, t8, t9 (same as
sandpaper edition)
Cassette: t1, t2, t3, t4, t5, t6, t7, t8, t9 (same as sandpaper edition)
FACDO CD re-issue: t1, t2, t3, t4, t5, t6, t7, t8, t9 (same as sandpaper
edition)
Black sleeve (B2 etched) vinyl: t1, t2, t3, t4, t10, t6, t7, t8, t5, t9 (ten
tracks, extra track inserted in fifth position, original track 5 moved to 9th
position!)
'1st 4' CD: t1, t2, t3, t4, t10, t6, t7, t8, [t5 + t9] (same as B2 vinyl, but
last track comprises t5 and t9 with a short pause in between)
Kooky CD re-issue: t1, t2, t3, t4, t10, t6, t7, t8, t9 (missing t5, moved to

..so I'm afraid "Return of ..." is not an exact replica of the vinyl but does sound better than previous CD versions.
