Have you ever actually left your country to test that theory?

Or even left your state?

Yah.. don't forget he's been to EYERACK, and been chillin' wiv' da 'E-mums'..

Ireland, Kuwait, Thailand, S. Korea, Japan, Bali, Mexico, Canada (if that even counts) and of course, eyerack.

Lived in 6 states and stayed for a month or so in at least 5 others.

Not saying I'm the most traveled around these parts, but I have not stayed in one place either.

A septic with a passport's rare enough, but with MULTIPLE STAMPS IN IT?????????????????/ I bet you're on a couple of "watch lists" for that.

Their accents seem to be dependant on skin colour too.

Their black blokes never sound like their white blokes, do they?

True dat. :\ohwell:

True indeed, black yanks sound more like humans in general (street gang types not withstanding). In fact in general, when I think of "Americans" somehow I'm not usually thinking of black folks. There's like a Venn diagram in my head showing septics and black people living in America, and there's a little crossing area of those few black chaps who emulate their white compatriots by being more cuntish.

One pronunciation that made me scratch my head was the pronunciation of the word 'measure'. He pronounced it exactly like 'major'.

Sort of like 'may-jer' (I can't describe it well.)

I've looked the word up in my electronic dictionary, and in one of the English-Japanese dictionaries, it noted that said pronunciation is an American regionalism.

Are there really regions in the US that have people saying 'measure' like 'major'?

the midwest on down through the south

interesting, since I've lived in Texas and Mississippi, and spent time working in Louisiana and Alabama...I've never once heard the word measure pronounced like major in "the south"...

I think she meant measure pronounced as may-shur rather than meh-shur. It is pronounced as may-shur by my extended family in the midwest.

Most of these examples seem to be from parts of America where I do not live so I say :P :P

and EYE-rack is definitely a hillbilly pronunciation.

I can see why I've stayed away from these boards so long. Mostly a bunch of cranky Brits bitching and moaning about everything under the sun, especially America.

I believe it's an American term, certainly heard it in some mafia movie, and it's also a common term in the music biz for record company suited vermin.

BTW, you cannot be guilty of linguistic provincialism, when you are the ORIGINATORS AND CENTRE OF THE LANGUAGE.

Just cos you bunch of book-dodgers can't spell night, don't try and deflect the shit back at us.

As for clarity...there's a few accents from the arse end of the other bit of Ireland that could baffle anyone from more than 2 miles down the road from their home. Geordies can be tricky depending on just how pissed they are, the same with some Scots (particularly from the fair city of Glassgow). However, last night I spoke to a Stokie, and as far as I could tell, his accent was Martian (actual native Martian, not Hungarian)......I swear I could understand Fradley quite well up until a certain blood alcohol level, and I MUST have spoken with many others, but me and this fella could NOT communicate, very very strange indeed, especially since I had me posh phone voice on, the one with "you" and "the" instead of "Y'" and "'a'".

eg....." I shall see you in the pub in ten minutes"...."Al c y' inna bar in ten"

That's the first time I have ever seen the Stokie accent being referred to as 'Martian'....

Stupid fuckwit yanks say stuff like:

Ass instead of ARSE butt instead of BOTTOM fanny for bottom/arse instead of vagina....

a-hole instead of arsehole

pants instead of jeans/trousers

PANTS ARE UNDERWEAR FOR FUCKS SAKE

sneakers instead of TRAINERS!

Nucular instead of NUCLEAR

Aluminum instead of ALUMINIUM

john instead of TOILET

Bathroom instead of TOILET

cellphone instead of MOBILE

Plus many more to come!

Strange thing is the Yank accent, seems to me there are 3 or 4 distinct accent types:

1,new yoik 2,texan/southern drawl 3,boston (poss due to all the oirish) 4,african american/latino american

But hey i could be wrong, answers on a postcard to:

Bristols are tits, you don't need to be a cock ney to know that........

"Arthur negus has held Bristols, that's not a result, that's just a bit of gossip" --M.Python, election night special, 1971.

There are no cockneys under 60 anyway, the Luftwaffe blew the Bow Bells into splitshot.

I object to your lewd assertions Cambo in the strongest possible terms!

Every man and his dog knows Bangorians should at the very least be able to fish their way around any of the coastal provinces, home and away, with one hand tied behind their back, having been brought up on a diet of hunting, fishing and fighting..in that order, trigger finger!

Ok,same same but different,I'll give you that gobshite!:read:  :thumb:

No-one with a proper Potteries accent would think I was from Stoke - I'm far too posh. (These things are relative, before anyone sneers.)

And, in fairness to Steve, if you do come across a proper old school resident of the Potteries speaking in full-on North Staffs dialect, it's fucking impenetrable to anyone who didn't grow up round here.

Back on topic: Americans say 'capsicum' and 'eggplant'. THE BIG FUCKING SMELLY-ARSED GAYERS.

1,new yoik 2,texan/southern drawl 3,boston (poss due to all the oirish) 4,african american/latino american

But hey i could be wrong,

Oh, you are.

  1. New York City alone has several accents: Brooklyn, the Bronx (I know they're different accents, but couldn't tell you what the difference is), Manhattan (same accent as California, I believe). Don't know if Queens and Staten Island have their own accents, but they well may. In addition to these Borough accents, there are several ethnic accents to be heard in New York City-- Jewish, Italian, and Puerto Rican immediately come to mind (although what I think of as "Italian" may be one of the Borough accents, Brooklynese, for example, but probably more 'hood-oriented, like Bedford-Stuy...). Jonathan?

  2. The Southern drawl also varies from state to state, although I couldn't even begin to guess at which backwater the "speaker" hails from (with the exception that Floridian is the absolute most incomprehensible mangling of proper American English pronunciation I have ever had the misfortune to hear).

  3. New England, which includes Bostonian, although again I don't know enough about the accent to know with certainty if one can distinguish between, say, a New Englander from Boston and one from Maine (although I'm fairly sure that Bostonian is a distinct variant of the New England accent).

  4. African-American-- As near as I can tell, a Southern variant transplanted to "Northern" cities.

"Latino-American"-- Nobody would call it that. "Latino," yes, WEST of the Mississippi. . Hispanic," yes, EAST of the Mississippi. "Mexican-American" (Or Cuban-American," or "Puerto Rican", etc.), yes. But never "Latino-American."

And as should be obvious, distinct from "African-American." And probably distinct from each other, as well. I.e., a Mexican-American accent will be different from a Cuban-American accent, etc.

  1. You forgot some. The midwest accent, for example. Very distinct. And the upper-midwest accent (the "Minnewegian" heard in Fargo, and from the illustrious mouth of Sarah Palin). I have it on good authority that there's a "Mormon accent," most likely heard in Utah, although I have no idea what a "Mormon accent" sounds like. It's likely that there are other regional accents that I'm forgetting...

And saving the best for last, Californian, which, like the identical accent in Manhattan, is the national standard for proper, accent-less standard American English.
