I also really like New Order's "Republic". The production seamlessly smoothes out the rough edges of their earlier ugly output, and I like the way they removed the disruptive and jarring bass sound. It's obvious they were taking a lot of top-notch cocaine while they were making it, and this has rendered the final product suitably bland, vaucuous and almost wholly affectless. It was their biggest-selling record in the United States, and that's a sure sign of a truly great record. I file it alongside Phil Collins and Huey Lewis and the News in my all-time favourite albums. It's a masterpiece.

It also sounds great when you're forcing a half-starved rat into a mutilated woman's lacerated vaginal cavity. Perfect mood music, in other words.
