I've just had my laptop reformatted as I suspected it had a virus as it was running so slow. However, it is still running slow.
Two questions:
I've tried to put a password on my wireless router but it won't let me as it says my wireless settings are not compatible??
Also, how can I tell what my broadband speed is? Up until a month ago, it was really fast. It could just be that the broadband is slower.

Jem, there are three basic settings for wireless encryption, fuck all, WPA and WEP. You need to make sure it's the right sort you're using, or the password is irrelevant. So if it's set to WEP, try setting it to WPA and trying your password again. WEP is not such a clever idea in a big city, as it can be cracked pretty swiftly. Windows can do some strange things with wireless encryption, if all else fails, run it's wireless setup wizard, it makes no sense at all, but seems to work.
To get an idea of your broadband speed.......

RM, I suspect somebody is hijacking my wireless as it's so slow. Still can't put a password on it though, settings not compatible. I think I'll just get my rifle and walk up and down the block several times a day.
Why not just turn your router off at the wall when you're not using it?
That way the dirty pirate will need to spot when you've turned it back on in order to reconnect.
Alternatively, you could just turn the wireless off and connect using a cable. Re-run the connection speed thing, and see if it's improved.
An even simpler way of seeing if your connection is being pirated is to turn your own computer off and see whether the traffic light on the router is flickering. If it is, you've got dirty pirates.
You should be able to interrogate the router in order to see who's on it. If it's a Netgear, you can do this by clicking HERE and navigating though to the wireless config.
I don't think another user would cut your connection speed in half, unless he's a total pervert. More likely there are a few users in your area that share the same feed.
Not many people get the full speed quoted. People are always moaning about it.

Unfortunately that may not mean much. Internet Service Providers all tend advertise their speeds (8mb, 24mb etc) as being "up to" rather than actual. In reality you won't get anywhere near the number advertised unless you're on a very good service or very close to your telephone exchange. In Scotland I'm lucky to get half the 8mb I'm paying for but then again I am in the sticks.
Wireless can be a pain in the arse, so much so I've reverted to making sure all my PCs are on network cables or Powerline which is very good if you're having constant wi-fi problems. It also eliminates the need for security measures like wireless passwords etc.
As mentioned, can be a bit of a bastard but look for WPA or WPA2 in your router setup and set a password. The network adapter on your computer needs to have the same password.

Did you perform your speedtest while connected via wireless? Wireless is shite, just accept that, plug a cable in a deal with it.
But yes, if you're on 25Mb, and you're getting 12, that's pretty good. Shitty as it seems, that can't really advertise it any other way, they can know the speed at the exchange.....after that you're at the mercy of the dodgy green copper under the road.
Colin's diagnostic procedures are spot on, follow them. But really, lose the wireless, that's probably why you're slow.......not because it's actually a slow wireless connection, but just because everything needs to be sent 75 times over and over again, because next door have a microwave and a baby monitor. I'm only 8 feet and a weetabix wall from my wireless access point.....and it can take a good 0.5 seconds for my hitting the spacebar, to pause a video I'm watching, if connected via wireless.....so I am perpetually cabled up.
Setting a password can be tricky....best bet is to have a chat to the router (usually they have a webpage as a control panel, becuase they run their own operating systems, usually FreeBSD(or OSX as Mac users call it), or a very slim Linux.....can't scale you see....or for that matter....run 24/365. You have to make sure the router is set to use the same type of encryption as you want to set on the computer.
Best security though is a nice, solid, relatively leak free, ethernet cable, less that a fiver from a reputable computer supplier (or £45 from PCWorld). I mean...last time I seen your PC, it didn't look to portable, so why exactly would you need wireless? Sometimes I think people decide to use it becuase it'd tidier, which is a fairly stupid reason to ruin your internet experience.

Had the same thing with virgin,kept getting them emails saying you now have "up to" 50 meg,load of bollocks!
