Firstly, the gruniard's site made my browser shit itself (albeit non-fatally), why use 30K of HTML when 14Meg of scripted wank will do.

Secondly, it's a lie, I know NOBODY who's even considering it, yet I know many many people who read Harry Potter.

Thirdly, in what respect does it constitute an upgrade. An upgrade is where you spend money to make your machine faster. I have never "moved up" the windows ladder and experienced faster performance, in fact it's the exact opposite. (Quick example from a few years ago.....I benchmarked Unreal Tourney accross three OS's with the same level, number of bots, res, graphics settings etc.....results: Windows 98se, 100FPS, Windows XP 50FPS, Linux 200FPS.....not only does that make the "upgrade" a downgrade, it also proves you realy do not get what you pay for and that the best things in life are indeed free). Vista was something of an exception, at least in terms of gaming performance, I lost only maybe 1-2% from my framerates.....but that in itself proves 64bit is snakeoil I suppose (the only benefit being you get more than 4GB of RAM available).......However Vista's desktop experience is repulsive, and dangerous. It runs the hard disk almost constantly doing secret stuff (paranoid am I? OK, next time you boot your vista infected machine....while it's still thrashing the drive to death while trying to pretend your desktop is ready to us, do a ctrl alt del and bring up the task manager....now go to the processes tab and sort it by the CPU column to see what process is pissing with the drive (on a modern PC full throttle HD use doesn't use much CPU, but it still uses a detectable amount), and instantly....the drive stops running so you can NEVER find out what it is.), and it's constant "are you sure" crap in place of some actual security would be hilarious if it wasn't so suicide inducing. And it's pointless anyway, after you clicked "yes for fuck's sake" 27000 times for such system critical functions as watching a DVD, what are you gonna click when it asks "would you like to install this childporn laden, credit card stealing, spam spewing malware" (BTW....if the choice is that, or installing anything from Norton or Macaffee, to defend against it, take the virus every time.....a virus will infect and fuck your machine rarely if you have any braincells, those two anti-viruses with fuck it, and you, right up the tradesman's, lube free, 24/365). I killed so many system services on Pissta that I eventually rendered it unbootable, but on the last time it did boot, thrash thrash thrash went the drive.

Not tried 7 yet for a couple of good reasons.

1. I tried a Beta of Windows ME once, it was fabulous, feature rich and worked really well and quickly. Then I installed the final release version and it was painfully slow, half the cool stuff was missing and the other half was fucked, I swear they have a deparment that exists solely to fuck up and ruin anything good they accidentally produce.
2. Cracks for pre-release verions tend to time out.
3. I know of no proven reliable crack for the final retail verion.
4. I'm TERRIFIED that it's bootloader will stomp all over my XPpro bootrecord, because there's no easy way to fix it, you have to reinstall both OS's again, XP first, then vista, then drop your backed up versions over the top of the new installs. And worse, my BIOS is not really able to understand 1TB hard drives and this makes partitioning the drive seriously painful.

Once a decent crack rolls round (why pay bill for his stolen goods?), and I read about enough people doing what I will (overwriting Vista with 7, to create a dual-boot XP/7 instead of XP/Vista), without getting bent over and taken to brown town......then I'll give it a go, and you can enjoy a more informed hate filled rant from me.

my word to describe 7 is "refined" Many of the things that drove people batty about Vista have been smoothed out. If you have XP, Win 7 will be fine. Most folks don't want the second coming, the want a good appliance of a computer that does their daily tasks well.

Trust me, the major reason people may buy win 7 is "It's not Vista. baby!"

I knock MS because their CEO called me, and anyone else who doesn't use windows, a Paedo, a terrorist and a communist (Of course he only got away with it because most people do not realise he basically meant everyone....what OS does your phone run? Windows? What about your broadband router, or the supercomputer at your bank eh?). And also because nobody has ever CHOSEN one of their products. Seriously, pop into PurpleWorld and ask them how much a certain machine is WITHOUT DOS installed on it, see what they say. Actually Dell will now refund you your MS-tax if you buy an infected machine from them and want to run a real OS on it.

All I care about is......

Does the disc stop the moment the desktop appears so I can actually use the desktop? (if it does it'll be the first since before XP), particularly does it run on and on and on for no reason. Does it ask for admin rights everytime you go for a piss.

If it's faster than vista, that means it's faster than XP!!!!!! Will have to investigate.

Personally, I use Windows at home because I use Windows in my job (and, at the moment, that's XP)... If Linux takes over the desktop world (or Macs, even), then I'll change over...

At the end of the day, it's just an operating system to run whatever applications/games you want to run...

Having said all that, I've got a "new" (well 2 years old - use it for trying out various apps) PC which I'll try out Windows 7 (got it a couple of weeks ago)...

I'll probably have to wait a while to install it, though, as the next couple of weekends are pretty full, so probably late November! :p

Vista would have been alright, if it hadn't been a mess, maybe 7 will be good (gonna look into downloading it soon), they nicked some of the better bits of KDE and GNOME (linux desktops), which must surely make the user experience better. And I assume 7 has expanded on the (albeit VERY crude, as you can see from the video), stuff they took from Beryl (or Compiz as it's now called).

Actually I sort of like Linux being on the fringes, if it wasn't, if every dribbling tard who clicks web ads saying "speed up your PC" or "check your drivers" or "scan for viruses", then claims they did nothing to precipitate the un-backed-up data holocaust currently munching through their (unpartitioned, natch) hard drive......it'd work just like windows, and at the end of the day, I use it because I like how it works....if becoming more widespread would compromise that, then I'd like it to stay obscure. I just hate the lies that MS spread....I mean if you believe them, my mum, who can barely change channels on her TV, must be a super nerdy computer genius, because she never comes running to me saying she's stuck. The reason she finds her Linux based netbook easy is that she does not have experience of windows, her mind has not yet been damaged into thinking it is reasonable to stop a machine by pressing a button labelled start. MS paid Asus several millions to stop making the EEE's with Linux on them, and paid even more to put up a site saying linux netbooks were harming babies or something. As you can see, MS are not at all shit scared.

Nick, OSx on the Mac is a comercial development of FreeBSD[1], which is pretty much kissing cousins with Linux.
