Itunes Playlist Help

Hey guys. I transferred my Itunes files from one partition of my HD to the other to make space.

But, of course, I have lost my playlists in the computer. If I plug in my Ipod again, it gets wiped.

Any good tools that allow mw to transfer the whole collection or just playlists lock, stock, and barrel?

I have had to reconstruct each playlist before and would love to avoid that.

Just trying to make my Ipod an upload device so I do not have to hand type 40-50 playlists!

The Apple people are restrictive because no record company would go near them if an Ipod were easily made into an upload device.

If you had backed up the playlists beforehand or not wiped the iPod they could be recovered. At this point, you're going to have to rebuild them.

if you still have your iTunes folder on the old partition the try coying the iTunes library, iTunes library Extras, and iTunes library xml files over, if you've already deleted these, then unfortunately I think you're screwed!

The other day i opened itunes and everything was wiped clean. Just like that....gone! everything!. Like if i had just opened it for the first time. Oh I was mad like a German kid. I stepped outside and strangled some kittens and baby unicorns.........im better now.............much better.

All the music is on an external HD. If I have to I will reassemble. Just now Itunes seemis to be missing music. serves me right.

I only lost like say 5 albums out of almost 900-not bad. I always back the data on an external HD-for occasions just like this.

Try imTOO iPod converter. I had the same problem last year, and someone on this site led me to there. It worked like a charm.

the problem is usually that the file hierarchy in the itunes library file has changed. every file has to be re-found two options you could try out are: a) making sure the file structure is exactly the same on the external hard drive as it was on your internal disc and naming the external drive the same as the previous. this can be hit or miss. songs can go missing etc but has worked a couple of times when I've up graded hard drives. or b) move the "iTunes Library" file to an "iTunes Music" holding folder on the external drive and then create an alias and move that to the original location on your internal drive. remove the original copy of "iTunes Library" and rename the alias so that your pooter thinks the alias is the original library file and points to the external drive. you'll also need to reset the "iTunes Media folder location" in itunes preferences. this is a mac route-around so I can't give you PC help good luck

Yet another way, and easiest, as long as you have your old "Library" file and you music folders/songs are all named the same as when they where on your computer:

1. Make a copy of your "Library" file and put it in another folder, as this might take a couple goes to get it right.

2. Open up itunes... but DO NOT play any music.

3. Go to "Edit" , "Preferences"

4. Click "Advanced" tab

5. Change the "iTunes Music Folder Location" to where ever your music is now located

6. Click "OK"

That should do it. If it doesn't work the first time, close iTunes, delete the "library" file and replace it with the copy you made earlier. (note: the "library" file needs to stay in mydocuments on the c-drive, no way around this).

Thing to note about external harddrives ENSURE YOU HAVE THE EXTERNAL PLUGGED IN BEFORE OPENING ITUNES! as it will automatically change the "iTunes Music Folder Location" back over to the Mydocuments on the C-Drive if the external is not plugged in.

If it ever does, no worries, just follow the procedures I listed above and you'll be fine. (done it far too many times over the years, but it is a bugger to fix as it will take multiple attempts before getting it right).
