The Strokes: "Band of the Decade"?

The Strokes' debut album has been voted the best of the decade in a poll conducted by the NME. Personally I see this a savage indictment of the cultural vacuity of our times: a record pretending that it's 1980 made by wildly overprivileged New York twats with shit hair and - don't even get me started - "skinny jeans" who weren't even born in 1980. It sounds great down the old student disco after 8 pints of cheap lager*, I grant you, but beyond that? Piffle.

What do other NOOLers think?

Pull on your "skinny jeans", fat boy....

(* - Yes, I do know this from repeated experience. Yes, I was nearly 30 at the time. Yes, I was letching after people a decade younger than me. But The Strokes are still wank. Don't judge. Fuck off.)

So the fillies dig them then?

Have you just had to read back through two weeks of nme.com to come up with that gem, Fradders?

Er, are they any good then, this lot? :uhoh:

You cheeky fucker. I knew I should have put a "I know this is a bit late, but..." disclaimer.

No-one else has mentioned it, and the issue has been festering like a vast pus-filled abscess in my tiny mind for the last few weeks. The question still stands.

(Though perhaps the point is I'm just getting too old for this shit, eh?)

I am going to see Julian Casablancas next week, he was the chief songwriter for The Strokes.

Is This It was great when it came out, I agree with the 8 pint analogy Fradders

Anyone with a name like Julian was bound to lose the plot a wee bit, so it's not his fault the rest of their stuff was as insufferable as any Simply Red release.

Elton John is as credible as the NME these days.

Maybe I'm just getting old.

Band Of The Decade has to be GIRLS ALLOWED :food:

For once I agree with the shite NME. The Strokes 1st & 3rd albums are brilliant. Maybe some on here are too old to appreciate good new music. :shades:

No. Some simply appreciate good music

First Strokes album had one reasonable track. Had a copied-from-Hooky bassline I seem to remember. I was working in a record shop at the time.

Someone called Julian who's a twat (certifiably so) but who certainly isn't a cunt, is Julian Cope

Blast from the past

I liked a couple of tunes off the first record at the time but haven't touched the CD in well over erm, must be seven years now. Last Nite is a cracking single but the rest of the album is drawing a blank at the mo. Now I think of it that one which starts with a sort of "clipped drum machine" riff is pretty good too... Hard To Explain?

Must admit the fact they were such a stylised band put me off a bit. I think their arrival coincided with NME going from something that once upon a time was pretty readable to a vacuous "fashion" bible restricted to a clique of acts the editorial chose. Then overnight every new band seemed to start using that Ramones look and the whole "NY Cool" thing got boring and overused.

Not sure what I would put as band of the decade but it wouldn't be them... didn't every album they release post-debut tank a bit as well?

All these polls are pointless though... always subjective

Naming them band of the decade bothered me because

a) they're good, sure, but 'band of the decade'? That's proof this was the worst decade of music - ever.

b) they're a stylistic throwback, they're just recycling the past. The band of the decade should be someone who encapsulates the zeitgeist of what was new and fresh and exciting, not 'hey, dont we sound like an authentic 70s band?!' It's sad.

Bands of decade,2000's ? almost the best were --- Elbow,Doves,Arcadi fire. The best actually --- New order for touring again and re-order for duplicating them :evil4:

Whatever you lot say.. I stil turn up Reptilia when driving at fast speeds and will continue doing so. There's something about those out of tune guitars.

Might be my NO live training from 1986.

Some great songs, and listened to the debut album quite a bit when it first came out... but think even my iPod has better sense than to play it anymore, as I don't even remember the last time it was even in the shuffle lineup.

Band of the decade they are not...

two brit bands and a maple leaf? Truly faux brit accents are far more in vogue than real and semi-real accents...

They are definately one of the best bands this millenium. It's actually 2 fantastic albums and one dodgy album, and even that had a couple of great tunes on it. Then again perhaps Bad Lieutenant should be the best group this millenium :spit:

The Strokes "a band of the forthcoming 1000 years"? :uhoh: Erm, each to their own and all that but I reckon people will struggle to remember them in 20 years time. Unless they release the album of their lives in the next five.

Personally and after some thought I would probably vote Doves as the band of the last ten years. A fantastic four album run starting with Lost Souls in 2000 and ending with Kingdom of Rust this year. Plus a B-sides album inbetween of solid quality. Natch, they'd probably never win such an award in reality as they're not schlebrities or create a fuss in the music weeklies.

Just quietly get on with things in the background as all best bands do
