Chemical Brothers to play Hollywood Bowl

LA is a little different than that rest of the States...remember, Depeche Mode were able to sell out the Pasadena Rose Bowl in 1988 with very little American mainstream success, because they were superstars on KROQ.

The Chems play on the main stage when they do Coachella, which had an attendance last year of 160,000. The Hollywood Bowl holds 17,376. Both Underworld and Grace Jones have played there recently, so the Chems will have no trouble filling it. It'll be more of an event than just a gig.

well, it does not mean all 160.000 of them were there just for the Chems.

No, of course everyone wasn't there for the Chems. My point is that in southern California, they are much bigger than they are in other parts of the US. Playing at the Hollywood Bowl is the type of event that people will fly to LA for (me included) because it's special.

Don't forget 91X, true pirate radio (playing nonsingles, bootlegs, with an extremely amplified signal). KROQ only played what became big and acceptable from 91X.

In fairness, Daft Punk's light show is prettier than most. And there's an element of performance in there with the outfits and stage props etc.

And lets be honest, when the alternative to two wallies hunched over computers is two wallies hunched over computers alongside Brazillian dancing girls, cunts on stilts and fire eaters a la Basement Jaxx (yuk!) then there is an argument for electronic acts not trying too hard.

I heard a rumour about a London show in March but I assume it won't be long til the annoucement..

I've seen The Chems before, and Daft Punk, Orbital, and Underworld. I'm all for the wallies hunched over computers. :)

When I lived in Norwich in the early 2000s, there was an 18-month period when every venue in the town felt compelled to put Some Cunt With Laptop on as a third-on-the-bill support act.

Glitch Techno is a fucking abomination.* About as avant-garde as forgetting to wipe your arse. I have long suspected that all the above wallies hunched over computers actually do nothing as the music is all pre-recorded, but at least it's music. The distorted, cut-up sound of a ZX Spectrum loading is not.

This wee guy from Glasgow, Unicorn Kid, bucks the trend a bit though. Saw him at Wickerman last year. He's all over Radio 1 the now and just back from a mega tour of the States supporting Owl City. He gives it the big one on stage. Jumps about mental and crowd surfs etc. Check the place bouncing at about 1:40 on the video. Didn't see that at The Chemical Brothers!

Last time I was in King Tut's was to see American Music Club circa 2005. There was a point where the singer reacted with disbelief and then outright scorn when it transpired that the only people in the room who had ever taken horse tranquilizers were stood on stage. "You people are so fucking lame!!"

Chemical Brothers announce London shows and festival headline slot.

The Chemical Brothers have announced details of two London live shows - plus a headline slot at Spain's Sonar festival.

The dance duo will headline the Roundhouse venue in Camden on May 20 and 21. They will also headline Barcelona's Sonar on June 19.

The London shows will be the pair's first live outings in a year-and-a-half. Tickets go on sale at 9am (GMT) on Friday (February 12)
