Hmmmmm, why can you see the beam? OK it's a very large laser, so the tiny scattering of the atmosphere would POSSIBLE give an image of the beam, but IR is the LEAST scatterable end of the spectrum (hence red sunsets and blue skies). If it's in orbit it's a total fake. This is why I always rage against "hollywood science", if you told 100 people what the image is, and asked if anything struck them as odd about it, I doubt you'd get 5 who'd wonder why the beam is visible.

I'm assuming also that this is the OPTICAL rather than X-ray laser, since I'm sure somone woulda got pissed off about cracking off a nuke in space. Oddly the railgun tech developed for SDI now seems to show up mostly in rollercoaster launchers LOL.

It's like when the BBC showed pics of the first attack on Iraq with faked sound, I think I was the only person I know who spotted the lack of the 5-10 seconds sound delay there ought to have been given a reasonable estimate of camera distance of 1-2 miles...the only options are A. Fake or B. The BBC asked the merkins which building they were gonna twat, and miked it up (or more sensibly miked up the nearest school, hospital or mosque). OK there is also C. The Saddam repealed the laws of physics, but I tend away from this one.
