Bad shit man, their comeback lp last year was really good as well. Glad i got to see em' twice since they returned a few years ago:(
that is indeed a real downer. we were lucky enough to cross paths with him last year and he was generous with his time, warm, friendly and entertaining. my thoughts go out to beth and the rest of his folks
just been thinking about this since i heard today. i was gonna go n see the Smyths in town (for a tenner!) but not now. Poor Beth eh, first her mam passes away with cancer & now the main man. Thats really shit, poor Vin as well. At least the circle came good before the end

And now it's finally the right time to get the Best of album that I always wanted to buy I suppose.
Absolutely gutted by this news - i've been a big fan of Section 25 forever - I remember in the early 90's we had a party in our house in Angel and myself and my mate Richard put the 'Always now' album on and danced half naked like crazy bastards (well we were in those days) fueled by Cider. I remember a couple of girls walking in,had a look at me and Rich, got really scared and left....

Gutted! Me and Alex went to see them and Hooky at Rochdale last year. Was stood outside with them and their manager long after the gig,what a nice bunch of blokes. God bless mate.
A downer. Was never that familiar with Section 25 apart from Looking From A Hilltop in 84.Remember Larry Cassidy in the Play At Home doc and those parts when he's talking while driving "That's the trouble with Factory - you wait forever for your boat to come in and, you know, maybe it never will"

It's strange and saddening to witness someone with the zest and prescence to perform on stage, have their flame extinguished within a matter of weeks.
Am now even more grateful to Jim R for smuggling me back stage at Plan K in December. Spending an hour in that small dressing room listening to Larry and Donald Johnson chat set lists, band talk etc was an education in itself. Just a moment in time that you could never imagine or replace.
In the absence of knowing quite what to say to someone like Larry Cassidy presenting him with a Vikings Tony Wilson badge was a useful ice breaker, he chatted away with me for a few minutes and you could tell what a genuinely nice bloke he was. No musician superiority going down just an honest, interested and funny guy.
Hooky's collaboration with Section 25, while suiting both sets of musicians, provided Larry with one last great hurrah. Those 4 European dates in 2008 provided some of the biggest head line slots of Section 25's career and renewed interest in a band who's main body of work was over a quarter of a century old by then. Amazing that after all that time they should bring out albums as strong a Part Primitiv (2007) and the excellent Nature and Degree (2009), which to these ears was better than either album New Order released in the noughties.
First thoughts on hearing this news was for Larry's daughter Beth. Only a young girl who has tragically lost both her parents in the last 6 years. Larry must have been proud of Beth's contribution to Nature and Degree, her vocals were as prominent as his and her melancholy northern lilt suited the Section 25 sound to a tee.

R.I.P., Larry - I had the pleasure of chatting to him outside in Brussels a couple of years ago, and also saw them several times since...
I echo Will's thoughts. Larry was very personable to me and re: order in Brussels. A very warm and friendly man with a dry sense of humour. I'm glad you got to have a chat with him JG.

Such sad news, I grew up on their records and never got to see them live. I've always thought very highly of them, and I'm glad that Larry Cassidy was able to do what he loved until the end. It's really weird and sad seeing your idols break up, retire, and then pass away. :(
