The wireless router I got with Virgin Media is total gash. Can anyone recommend a replacement for less than £100 that won't constantly drop the connection if you move by 1mm?!
My laptop is an Acer Aspire 6930G.

are you sure it's the router and not the actual connection?
just going by my lousey connection with sky, not sure what virgin are like.

I didn't even get offered a router of Virgin. Ended up getting a Linksys. Covers the whole house no probs.
Are you on fibre optic or ADSL/ADSL2+ Virgin Media?
If it's ADSL/ADSL2+ through your phone socket I'd definitely go for the Netgear DGN1000. I bought one a few months ago and it works like a charm on my BE Broadband connection. You literally never need to reset it and the wireless has been rock solid in terms of stability, reliability and there are lots of security options. Worth a look...
If it's fibre optic you may be stuck with the Virgin Media equipment. Perhaps just ask for a replacement router and send the original back to begin with?
Otherwise for £50 the Netgear is pretty damn good.
From the problems you've described and before you splash out on a new router it may be wise to gently unscrew and check out the wiring on the "master" BT phone socket the Virgin kit is using. Or better yet shift the router to another socket just for a quick test. If the problem still exists then it's probably the Virgin router to blame and I'd go ahead getting a new one.

Not had any problems with Virgin Media's Netgear wireless router in the 2 years i've had it.
Well, Virgin Media would be a cable setup, so that rules out ADSL.
I never got Virgin's Wireless router, just the cable modem. That then plugs into a Wired Cable Router (the Netgear RP614), which then plugs into a Wireless Access Point (the Netgear WG602).
However, that was a configuration put in some time ago - it may be simpler (!) to go for something like the Netgear WGR614 - this retails on Amazon for about 33 quid.
Anyway, there are other products other than Netgear...

Its cable. They're insisting there is nothing wrong with it but I've ruled out all other possibilities. If I wire it straight into the laptop I get a constant 9.8MB connection. Borrowed another wireless router from work and it connected fine!
