Hundreds of people were turned away during the general election. Complete nonsense. Britain is an industrialized, wealthy democracy and should know better. This shouldn't happen except for somewhere like the Sudan or some such place. It probably wouldn't make a difference in the general election, but the council elections are a different story. What the fuck is wrong with these people? I saw on BBC World News that "people should know that the polls close at 10:00" therefore it's their fault. BS! The elections in the US are far from perfect (note: the 2000 election), but polls will stay open for people who cannot make it before their official closing time. No one should be turned away from the polls--citizens have the right to vote! Pisses me off....

Welll.... 7am to 10pm is a pretty large window of opportunity to be fair.
I think the outrage was about many people turning up at 9pm, and not getting their vote after queuing for an hour.
I'm sure there will be legal challenges and by-elections in the constituencies where a few hundred votes would make a difference, but I doubt its really going to affect the overall tally. We are well and truly hung, and in the hands of an auction for power.

During our 2004 presidential election I queued for more than 3 hours to vote. People in the queue were ordering pizza to be delivered to the polling station. I ended up getting bronchitis (even though it was in sunny Florida) and spent the next day at home from work, lying on the couch, watching footage of Bush's election speech. And it was my birthday. What an absolute shit day.
