Just watched that on iplayer before i saw this thread, funnily enough. I remember seeing the footage a couple of years back of the motorway incident.

My point exactly. The Potteries reaches the deranged parts of the psyche that no other urban conurbation can. If they'd been in Leeds they'd just have gone for a few beers and had a quiet night. Where's the fun (or the harrowing documentary) in that, eh?

Funny thing is the natives seemed a great bunch, laughed my socks off at the lad who took the hammer off her then "left it to the professionals".

Like Johnny I saw the initial airing then forgot all about it until I turned over 5 mins in.

I had no idea of the events subsequent to the motorway incident....WOW!

And I hate to say it....but Stokies do seem an OK bunch....I mean they were nice to a Norn Iron family within weeks of a fuckin HUGE IRA bomb somewhere on the mainland, right at the height of 80's paddynoia.

I remember watching the motorway clips but had no idea about the other stuff. I didn't even know there had been a murder.

I'm not easily scared, but I don't think I'll sleep well tonight.

It's the motorway footage that really gets me: everything from seeing them running into the road and getting hit by cars flying at full pelt up the M6, through to the initially horrified looks on the faces of the police and then their sheer disbelief when the girls start fighting with them after they've been run over.

And all that stuff about "they're trying to take your organs" was serious Mulder & Scully material....

For those in foreign parts. The programme was called Madness in the fast lane. I can't see it not being shown worldwide, there's a big enough market for Police programmes.

Some details for you starting with the Guardian review;

"There were fewer explanations on offer in Madness in the Fast Lane (BBC1), even though the events in question only happened a couple of years ago. This film carried on from where an episode of Motorway Cops – which showed Swedish twins Ursula and Sabina Eriksson repeatedly running into traffic on the M6 and getting knocked down – left off. The previous film ended with Ursula in hospital and Sabina (miraculously unhurt) being released after serving one day in custody for assaulting a police officer and trespassing on the motorway.

What happened next was even more extreme. Sabina stabbed a stranger to death and threw herself off a bridge on to the A50, breaking both her ankles and fracturing her skull. She refused to say a word in court, leaving the judge little option but to sentence her to five years for manslaughter. This was a disturbing film, partly because it felt so voyeuristic – did we really need to see the footage of them being hit by traffic quite so many times? – but mostly because of the absence of any explanation for the women's behaviour.

The two forensic psychiatrists who examined Sabina came up with clever-clogs diagnoses (induced delusional disorder and acute polymorphic psychotic disorder), but no one seemed that bothered about why two apparently sane women had behaved as they had. And if I was a relative of Glenn Hollinshead, the man who was stabbed to death, I'd want to know why Sabina had been released without being offered serious psychiatric help."

5 years seems like a light sentence for such an awful crime. The judge 'had no choice' because she wouldn't talk about it in court. I'll remember that when I'm up for that parking ticket I'm fighting.
