I've not bought many newly-released music on any format this year - last year the men were back, this year was a year for nostalgia - but Robyn's Dancing On My Own and Hang With Me were impressive songs.

2010 saw the return of Pendulum; Wicthcraft was good, the In Flames collaboration Self vs Self wasn't bad either.

I don't know if these would count as songs, but Shadows Movement and the Jan Hammer Crockett's Theme cover were fine Michael Cassette productions too.

I probably couldn't list 10 new songs I've listened to this year, but have been impressed by The National's Runaway (and several other tracks on their LP) and I'm New Here by Gil Scot-Heron.

I struggled after 6 or 7. Put some dubstep on at the end in the mistaken belief that i might be hip.

Strange year for music, cos recessions have brought shit-loads of tours/re-unions but not much creativity.

Albums (in no particular order):

A Guy Called Gerald - Tronic Jazz The Berlin Sessions (my album of the year - doesn't break new ground, but has had numerous repeated listens and it still sounds great) Daft Punk - Tron OST (only just got this - very nice indeed) Simian Mobile Disco - Delicacies (much better than their last one!) LCD Soundsystem - This Is Happening (a definite grower - thought it was "so so" when I first heard it) The Losers - Beautiful Losers (very good - Eddy Temple Morris of XfM - recommended via a friend) Autechre - Move Of Ten (a very accessible album from Autechre) The Orb featuring David Gilmour - Metallic Spheres (very nice indeed) Delphic - Acolyte (still like this - I know a lot of people don't x months on) Section 25 - Retrofit (better than I though it was going to be)

Still to get (although they're very good - apparently. If I don't get them for Christmas, I'll order them on Christmas Day!):

Edwyn Collins - Losing Sleep The Fall - Your Future Is Our Clutter

And (in terms of singles):

Orbital - Don't Stop Me / The Gun Is Good (didn't like this at first, but it's a definite grower)

Isn't it about time we had a specially designated "Grumpy Old (Wo)Man" forum? Alternatively, we could just let Hibster have his own "Young at Heart" forum and fuck him off over there. ;)

Personally, I continue to love long-playing records by Beach House, Warpaint, The Radio Dept. and Tindersticks. I also feel no shame when I say ex-Pipette Rosie Dougall's album makes me spontaneously ejaculate - thanks, Rosie.xx

found warpaint far better live than on record do like the way the bass player moves

checked with her after if she was inspired by hooky at all in terms of style & she said no (so not consciously. or not admitting it then)

bizarro was a good tour, we had a cover of the theme from cheers in bristol

any of them though? seriously? get to spotify now! tis a mixed bunch of styles

martina topley bird was the singer on tricky's maxinquaye album, you must have heard that? retribution gospel choir is a side project of alan sparhawk of low the national had loads of coverage this year, check out any end of year list from a music magazine & that will be in it - mostly cos they missed alligator/ sad songs for dirty lovers & have been making up for it ever since

there are a few debut albums in there though - race horses are welsh, admiral fallow are scotch, not sure where the school are from but its a st etienne ish thing, perfume genius is a bit like last years soap & skin album (that probably doesn't help admittedly) or p j harveys white chalk - check out the song mr petersen for a joy division name check

meursault are brilliant though

Sounds like it's recorded in somebody's garage though. The Daft Punk sample is just bizarre. I say 'sample', but it sounds like someone's just stuck a radio on in the background whilst they were recording.

Can't get to grips with Daft Punk's "Tron" soundtrack though. The finest moments end too quickly and there's far too much orchestration. Guess it just does what it says on the tin - it's a soundtrack and offers little more.

Gorillaz' "Empire Ants" is one of the most beautiful songs I'll ever hear in my entire life. Defo my no.1 for 2010. Er, it's also my mobile ringtone too (the uplifting bit 2mins in when Little Dragon finally appears)

Chemical Brothers' "Swoon".

Never got to grips with the last LCD album. Most of the tracks were just far too long and made it slightly inpenetrable.

Kylie's "Get Outta My Way" (yeah, I know, but I like it. Perfect pop. I made the mistake of humming this one day in the office though and I got a huge stack of Kylie CDs as a leaving present when I changed jobs!)

Absolutely love 75% of the new Deadmau5 offering 4x4=12 but would have to plump for "A City in Florida" if I were forced to name just one standout track.

French Navy by Camera Obscura is a great song. I enjoyed seeing them at 2009 Ben & Jerry fest in London. BUT it's not a 2010 release. I bought the album for my sister last xmas, and you can find an upload of the video to youtube dated March 2009.

In fact, if there's been a darker, funkier, more genre-busting track than this in the past ten years I've yet to hear it.

So number 4: Pon De Floor by Major Lazer. Is that the same track that was uploaded to Youtube in June 2009? Dont think it counts as a 2010 track... The Ellie Goulding track is a bit iffy too. Some people had that on last years list on this very site.
