Probably the most disappointing gig I have ever been to.

The best part of the day being the fireworks at the end.

No atmosphere at all, 'Madchester' died on this day IMO.

Didn't go . was it on the Saturday or the Sunday ?if it was the Saturday I was at the Hacienda that night on one of only 2 ever visits there. Saw loads of coaches on the motorway up taking fans to Spike Island but we somehow knew the gig would be crap so headed to Manchester. Then the Sunday and monday bank holiday in Blackpool

Wouldn't have been seen dead there, frankly. Roses were a brilliant studio band with awful live reputation, kept alive by Brown today, and the gig had 'traffic jam' written all over it.

Anyway, my Mum wouldn't let me go

Shit day all round.

My mate's bird drove us up, after his car broke down ... in a MINI!

Ouch.

And I was seeing a bird in Manc at the time and our arrangement was to try and meet at the 'merchandising stall' at 2pm, and then on the hour every hour until we actually saw one another.

Got there, and there was about twenty facking merchandising stalls. Never got to see her all day.

Just remember a lot of sitting around and then a big beachball bouncing around the crowd during the Roses.

Think they might've also come on in broad daylight, which was a bit surreal?

Or maybe not, I would've been a mess by then anyway, probably.

I spent their set lying on the back seat of a coach with a very worried driver watching over me thinking I was going to vomit all over his bus. My mates should really have explained to him that there was definitely nothing left in my stomach by that point. (Allegedly) the cultural event of my generation, and I spent it comatose. This is pretty much a metaphor for my entire life.

Btw - Shane Meadows has announced that his next televised shebang will be "This is England '88". I can't be the only one looking forward to his televisual depiction of the Acid House scene in Uttoxter at its peak. Blissing out to the sound of Phuture clad in de rigeur wellies and John Deere boiler suit, dancing 'til dawn....and then back for milking just in time before the comedown kicks in.... ;)

Slightly off topic, but anyway, this video brings back some memories of 1988-1990 for me.

Don't watch the youtube one, it's 'censored'

10 points if you can spot the 'bucket bong'

It was a bit of a shit day wasnt it?

sitting/standing around all day in that heat smoking joints one after the other, arguing who was taking the 3 day trek to the bar, just to spill most of them on the way back  I was in no state by the time they came on, then you could hardly hear them anyway and to top it all off,our bus blew a tyre on the way up the road

oh,my mum did let me go...

More of a weekender for me n mine as we spent the night before at Konspiracy in manchester then to a local mini festival organised by the legendery Jimmy O'Neil in Edenfield on the way home, it was a loverrlleeeee evening afterall.....seemed rude not to make the most of it....then home about 5ish and too awake:wink: to sleep so decided to help mum out by vacuuming the downstairs quietly whilst family slept upstairs,,,,,,,and put up a flask of coffeee and some butties to then meet the rest of Helmshores finest at 8.30 to get the private coach to widnes........

......walking up the hill to the 'centre' of the village that morning with the sun shining into ones eighteen year-old eyes..still a bit 'seen-to' from the night before...and seeing the the silhoettes of ones mates before me was something that I decided to remember and so I stood and watched and listened and smelt everything before me and then I was greeted like all of us who met up that morning wherever we were...like a somebody who was in on a secret ......who was going to a place that would be remembered as legendery in the future and music fans would celebrate and envy those in attendence.......and......and.......

........and then we got on the coach and went to Widnes.......

..at least I was at Empress Ballroom and all the early gigs....

Went to a pub for a few before hand, nice beer garden in the back and caught a few rays. Remember when we got there we decided to head for an ice cream van on the far side of the field. Was taking an age to wade through the crowd, so I told me mate I'd meet him there and just ran across a load of people jumping over their heads. He never made it across, so I just lay on the grass for a couple of hours in the sun.

Was Gary Clail's ON U sound on? Anyway think it was a load of very heavy dub in the sun, nice. Met 2 lads I knew on the way back to the station and walked up with them. The lad I went with was already there. He'd left early to make sure he didn't miss the train. Consensus was he hadn't missed much.
