Yeah too obvious and never listen to those now. Check out less obvious stuff off the Babe Rainbow album and Spy In The House Of Love b sides and unreleased stuff album, some great gems on the latter.

Still got an old cassette of a gig they did in Norwich in April 92 that was broadcast on Radio 1 evening session- Yer Eyes and High In Your Face are massive, both blow away the Babe Rainbow album versions. You can actually find those 2 on the Live At The BBC album which was a compilation of songs from HOL gigs that Radio 1 broadcasted 1990-1992

I've never heard of House Of Love before, so thanks to everyone who brought them to life.

I've just listened to High In Yer Face and Nothing To Me. I can hear Dave Evans, Charlie Burchill and Johnny Marr (guitars), Stuart Adamson and Paul Hewson (vocals). Unfortunately the chords aren't dynamic enough to have stood the test of time, or at least, to get commercial recognition today. But still worth having a listen to.

I like some stuff by the House of Love but then they're not in the same league as Pale Saints, whom I just absolutely adored for those first two 4AD albums and singles around the Ian Masters era.

Are House of Love 'shoegaze' by the way? The jury seems to be out on this one!

I recall one reviewer describing em as 'weary pyschedelia' in a good way , not a negative way as that may immediately sound. Could totally agree with him . Always preferred em from the likes of Slowdive in that early 90s period . Regret never seeing HOL live which was compounded when I found out they'd even played a gig in my hometown around the time of the Fontana/Butterfly album in 89/90. Only found out a couple of years later when I bought the Spy In The House Of Love album and the was a list in the sleeve notes of the gigs they'd done.

I loved the first (Creation) album, still think it's great.

They played Reading Festival 1989, and I seem to recall them being very good, although I may have rose-tinted memory due to New Order's absolutely barn-storming set that night, probably my all-time favourite gig.

Might struggle to get to ten these days, the tweeness and banality overpowered me in the end back in 1992/3 and I totally lost interest in what had been a good live band at the end of the 80s.

Such a disappointment in the end. Guy Chadwick ran out of ideas and boy didn't it show.

Yep it sadly all went shit didn't it, Bickers leaving , Chadwick losing it, bands like Stone Roses becoming the focus of attention. Was a massive fan of Chadwick's lyrics & vocals and Bickers guitar from 89-92 but a year later I didnt even buy Audience With The Mind. Never got round to checking out the reformed HOL of a few years back, think they released some new stuff ( Days Run Away?) but gave it a miss.

Im guessing it's totally uncool to say this but I really love "Shine On". Great pop song in my book.

Have to confess though that I wasn't too overly cracked on THOL because they always seemed to be - in my eyes at least - one of those bands that the music inkies (in particular the melody maker) devoted too many front covers or exposure to week in week out, and I guess that sort of thing easily puts me right off bands straight away. This is the same reason why I never had much time for the Stone Roses and others.

I suppose with bands like Pale Saints who came along a little later and were part of that maligned 'shoegaze' scene, they weren't too overexposed or hyped up like a few others such as Ride, Chapterhouse or even MBV.....

Didn't Terry Bickers form Elevation after HOL split?

Ger Boy, I'm still not convinced, but I Don't Know Why I Love You isn't bad at all, apart from the double X video that was never going to get them recognised like Relax did for the Frankies...
