I've had the damnedest time (he-he, get it? The Damned? Johnny Rotten reportedly hated them? oh well, moving on) trying to find any PIL records in the shops. I mean there are plenty of Prince albums in the spots where "PiL" should be, and trust me I've been tempted to go ahead and settle for the Purple One, but my quest continues. Any recommendations, should I come across Messrs. Lydon and company?

well, they only released a few albums. i'd say 1989's '9' is their best. 'happy' is also good. or for a retrospective, you can always get 'greatest hits so far' for a taster. best songs in my opinion: disappointed and rise. there's also an album they released in a film-type tin years ago. if you can get your hands on that one you've found a gem, because it's REALLY rare. i've been looking for one for 12 years now with no luck.
Agentwood, are you talking about 'Metal Box' by PIL ? Because if thats what you've been looking for you can buy it from an Australian online site at www.chaosmusic.com.au
Metal Box (known as Second Edition in the U.S.) is a start. Jah Wobble was still part of the band and I think it's really the only album worth picking up. So, I guess it's an end, too!

Well, Agent, you won't get Metal Box domestically. It was an import in a tin can. Second Edition is the album title here in the states. Decent, atmospheric stuff at it's best. Not something to shell out your dollars for if you don't already have it.
i heard there were a few floating around in the US, but that was years ago. i heard that someone got one up at planet records in boston when i lived up there. but i guess the only point of one having the import is to be able to brag that one has it. may as well spring for the CD. not a major priority at this time, though. just keeping an eye out on both sides of the atlantic.
no, i mean i live back and forth on both sides, so wherever i am i just look there. i'm not going to spend some horrendous amount to have the album schlepped from one country to another, don't worry!
Ah, I'd go with "Second Edition/Metal Box" myself. (I had Flowers of Romance, but that got stolen). Not an especially cheerful album ("Albatross" is quite a downer as an opening song, and "Poptones" is as creepy a subject for a song that there has been).
The first live album "Paris Au Printemps" was a good documentation of the band up to the time, and it showed that the band were an actual group who could play their instruments; I remember hearing some arguments, especially after "Second Edition", that they were just making stuff up on the spot that they couldn't possibly replicate live. WRONG!
Lost track of 'em after awhile, but I do like the "Commercial Zone" album, which I think is just the "This Is What You Want" album mix preferred by somebody in the PiL organization over what Elektra in the States had released.
Oh, in case you hadn't heard about it, one of the most sublimely ridiculous TV moments that I've ever had the pleasure to view. PiL on American Bandstand. Yes, Uncle Dick Clark got to promote Second Edition to a bunch of thoroughly confused American teens on a May Saturday morning in 1980.
PiL and dick clark! wow, i would have given my left arm to have been a fly on the wall at that one! i can just imagine: 'that was olivia newton-john with 'xanadu'. now here's a funky new band out of england...public image limited!'
That's probably exactly how it went; I didn't have a VCR then, and I missed the AB marathon on VH1 when those vidcaps were made. Still, the memory of Pil trying to mime through "Poptones" and "Careering" still bring a smile to my face, plus the fact that they exchanged instruments halfway through one of the songs makes me laugh out loud.
see, i was too young to have remembered that. i remember the later years of AB, of course, but i was more of a solid gold watcher. now THAT was a classic show! don't think PiL made it on there, though. but rick springfield (sex god) sure did!

oh my gawd! that feathered hair! those tight jeans! he was so much better than leif garrett or scott baio, let me tell you. although, at the time i was just a wee lass, so i was more into elliot from ET (my first crush)and ricky schroeder. i just started realizing the babeitude of rick recently, actually.... but 'jessie's girl' has always been one of my favourite songs.

I came across one in Birmingham's famous Plastic Factory record shop only a couple of months ago. Problem was, it was a bit rusty round the edges and it was going for a rather high asking price of £20 all things considrered condition-wise. If they could do mail order I could post you up their address details and email contacts if you wish...

YMCA by Village People, I remember one night after a party in me nans, I think it was 91....a few of us had a cocktail of Acid and Lager, we visited the 24 hr garage about a mile away....my mate Melv wore my Grandad's cowboy hat, another mate Mark wore one of those fishing hats with compass and line built in, and I wore me nans pink jacket and a Victor Meldrew style bunnet.....went for fags and juice, Baldrick was too embarrassed to be seen with us, so he hid round the corner

I heard one of the guys ask fer milk or something, and he had a funny accent (like a Villager) so I started dancing and singing YMCA....tripping off me nut.....wicked night, the people at the counter shat it and quickly made way fer me to get me fags......all of us laughed all the way home....I don't think any of us could talk....except fer Baldrick, who kept saying Ya Mad Bastards

The first band I saw live & tho' they were the "pretend" version of the group (1983) they were still amazing...
