Earth tremor shakes Manchester LONDON (Reuters) - An earthquake has shaken Manchester, jolting residents but causing no serious damage. Seismologist Julian Bukits of the British Geological Survey said the quake on Monday appeared to be centred under the city itself and was felt widely around the area. He estimated it measured between 2.5 and 3.0 on the Richter Scale. "People felt a strong shaking and perhaps heard a loud noise. But it was not strong enough to cause damage," he told Reuters. Bukits said earthquakes of that magnitude hit Britain between three and 10 times a year, but the fact that it occurred in a large city meant many people noticed it. In September, an earthquake measuring 4.8 on the Richter scale shook much of central England and Wales. Bukits said that quake was several hundred times stronger than the Manchester tremor. Britain is not troubled by major earthquakes but it does experience a moderate rate of seismicity, according to the government's Environment Agency website. It said around 200-300 low to medium earthquakes were detected each year, although only 30 or so were strong enough for people to feel. Britain's strongest earthquake, in 1931, measured 6.1 on the Richter scale and was felt over much of western Europe. But damage was greatly reduced because the epicentre was in the North Sea.
