yeah, and it looks like he's homegrown, as expected. my terrorism professor from when i did my masters' degree was on 'dateline NBC' over the weekend, telling the public 'not to rule out' that it might be al-qaeda. way to get it right and alarm the public even more, bruce!

i don't think so...it's not the modus operandi of an islamist terrorist. they tend to go for one-shot suicide attacks that are aimed at symbols rather than people. the killing of people is expected, but a secondary consequence.
nothing can be completely ruled out. nonetheless, i would say that this man is probably homegrown.

that would be the one. fortunately i was a postgrad and managed to avoid the undergraduate, southern english 'ya' infestation during my 3 1/2 year residency in lovely northeast fife.

Ooh, I went to St Andrews too (great pubs). Even did some IR in my time, and I have a friend currently finishing an IR degree.

He's a member of the Black Muslims here in the States, but I doubt he recieved any sort of "mission" from them to do this (the victims included blacks as well as whites). In our present climate but also in the past, it's far easier to blame the "boogey man" (whether it's Al Qaeda now or Jews during the Jack the Ripper spree) than to see what's really behind it.

i was there from 1997-april 2002 (with a few breaks to live in the middle east). did an m.litt in international security studies and then went on to do a PhD which i, ahem, decided not to finish for the moment. when were you there?
i hung out at the cellar bar and the central, mostly. used to hang out at the westport a lot before it became all 'wine bar-y'. and a bit at the tudor my last year, since a good friend of mine is a bartender there. you?

I was there 1998-2002, just graduated in June. Used to go to the Cellar fairly regularly, because I drink a lot of real ale , and it's the second best place in town for that. So, quite freakily, I've probably seen you at some point or other. Never noticed anyone in a New Order t-shirt, did you??!
Otherwise, most of my drinking time was spent at the Whey Pat (best beer in town, and a generally a superb pub, though now reportedly under Belhaven ownership) and the Dunvegan, which was good for meeting rich American golf tourists who buy you drinks since they have nothing better to do with their money.
