Having witnessed JJ72 do a corking version of Chris Isaac's "Wicked Game" last night, the conversation naturally turned to all those cover versions we'd seen bands do live over the years. Coldplay doing "Bring On The Dancing Horses", Gene doing "Do You Know The Way To San Jose" and REM's "Dancing Queen" came to mind.

Saw The Bluetones doing "Waterfalls" by TLC in a non-ironic quite beautiful style that the song deserves. It was on some BBC Choice programme. V. good.
smashing pumpkins sitting at the edge of the stage singing 'i'd like to teach the world to sing' and then a really slow version of 'so long, farewell' from the sound of music, after a three hour 'rehearsal' gig for their 'melon collie' tour at a small venue in NYC.

Ronnie Wood doing Dylan's 7 days. Buffalo Tom doing She Belongs To Me (also by Dylan) Manic Street Preachers doing Stay With Me by The Faces and Rock n Roll music by Chuck Berry Jesus and Mary Chain done a great Tower of Song by the main miserable bastard himself Leonard Cohen and Pavement done a crackin Killing Moon by the Bunnymen.....there are more, but these are selected highlights;)
Fatima Mansions shitting all over "Shiny Happy People" is a nugget.
The Residents creating merry havoc with "(I Can't Get No) Satisfaction". Surely one of the most gleefully unlistenable things ever committed to (lurid yellow) vinyl.
But for a really happy happy joy joy cover version, you can do no worse than Stereolab taking on Antonio Carlos Jobim's classic feel-good Latino shuffle "One Note Samba". Pure summery bliss!
On this past Monday night, Sally Timms of the Mekons, at a solo gig, did a version of John Cale's Half Past France, in the style of VU songs like Sunday Morning, that sent shivers down the spine of every audience member.
Love Tractor (pals of REM) did a wonderful version of Kraftwerk's Neon Lights a few years ago.
The Bunnymen's take on Paint It Black was pretty good as well.
