Did anyone see this last night on the beeb?

It was a disappointment to see the absence of any members of NewOrder present in the poll, ;)

And yes i voted for the eventual winner,, although the debate, it seems rages on like wildfire...

It was Sir Winston Churchill ye of "we'll fight them on the beaches..." fame

but with Isabard Brunel (a guy who made bridges) and Princess Diana in the top 3 it wasnt much competition

jeremy Clarkson should have won it... and i don't mean I.K.B who he was supporting i mean Jeremy Clarkson!

John Lennon was on there as "the obligatory entertainment figure" on a list of "historical" ones....

No offence, but what did Diana do to put her in the running for "Greatest Briton"? C'mon, the royal family serves no real purpose whatsoever......

Anyway, I knew New Order wouldn't make the list (surprised Madonna didn't either, though. She does try to sound British now, they might as well make it offical..:D )

Scandalous. Diana - campaigned against landmines, but so did David Ginola.

Churchill shouldn't have made the top five.

Of the top ten, Shakespeare, Darwin or perhaps Newton should have won.

I'd like to cast an additional vote for Adam Smith, who never even made the top 100!!!

Proof that the British public are stupid.

As a history graduate, I reserve the right to act all superior about my opinions on this topic, and belittle the ill-informed historical opinions of commoners.

I hate shakespeare, i refuse to beleive that people actually talked like that.

As a History graduate with a Classics masters, I can tell you that Brunel should have won, with Frank Bruno second and Frank Bough third ;)

I actually had Frank Bough fifth on my personal list, but I could be persuaded to bump him up a couple of places.

What about Keats, Byron, and Shelley? The "War Poets" of the First World War? Browning? Monty Python? Where were they on the list?

Adam Smith??? The fooking economics man??? I hated that course, and he was a miserably boring man to have to write about...but you have a point, he was indeed a very important Brit...and did deserve to be up there...

adam smith hails from kirkcaldy, fife. he should have been given props just for escaping from that town!

a guy who made bridges? thats like saying to you shankly was a bloke who ran some football team. he was a visionary, a genius, a thinker, a seer. he should have won. churchill was in charge during the war, could do public speaking, paint a bit & had a sharp wit.
