Seen a fair few of their gigs 80s-mid 90s, but kind of drifted our seperate ways.

I love that shift work song, my girlfriend played it to me some years back, we lost the tape, but the whole album was out there stuff, I used to play it on surf trips to the west country, cooool. Mark e Smith is he still alive? or pickled?

He seemed pretty well by his standards-uh last week !

Voted for "This Nat Sav Grace" as it appeared on the cassette version. I genuinely thought that was the title until i opened up the sleeve properly!

Used to be a huge fan, my second ever gig was The Fall at the Barrowlands in 1988. Venues got a lot smaller from then on and I pretty much lost interest after "Extricate". My mate's still right into them and plays me the new stuff but to be honest it seems like quality control has gone right out the window.

Saw them in King Tut's in (I think) '99. They were shite.

"Extricate" is probably the most accessible. Work back the way from that album for the easiest introduction. "Live At The Witch Trials" aint for the faint hearted! The singles complilations which came out circa '90 are also quite good. As is "Seminal" another compilation/live album offering not listed above.

Almost forgot, "Hip Priests And Kamerads". Good introduction to early Fall.

As I said in the above post, I would start off with 1990's Extricate. Dead good and dead easy too listen to (comparitively speaking). You should have no problem getting it in HMV

i only own one fall album...The 458489 A sides (that's really the title...with those numbers:shy: ) which is like "a best of" of their early to mid-80s stuff (my favourite period of the fall). full of pop songs and are really the catchiest and the best! and if you like...you could get the acompanying double cd...the B-sides. i'd go with that for beginners and then work backwards...cuz with 30+ records the fall has recorded (and they've been around as long as JD/NO ) you have to start somewhere.

None of them have sufficient good songs on to merit a vote.

Well, I can't imagine a Cure obsessive to even think about listening to a Fall album.... isn't it just a little pointless you replying to this thread when it's very clear that a fair proportion of you have no time for them? Of the live stuff they've done, I've always really liked the Live In America: A Part Therein 1981 a lot; favorite compilation if the 1977-79 collection of the early singles.

Shift work, reminds me of the 2002 ashes series.

Went with Hex Enduction Hour, basically because it's the only one I've heard most of.

When I was a punk I bought 'It's the new thing'. I liked their sound when Brix was in the band, but was never really enough into them to buy in bulk.

That's playing it far too safe, Benny! Early Singles, Light User Syndrome & Hex Enduction Hour.

Oh, and the fact that I wrote the sleeve notes for Early Singles is irrelevant. Some great great songs on that CD and they sound fabulous with the 24 bit remastering.

Any feedback on your Fall compilation, Spotnick ? Have you rushed out and bought the entire back catalogue ? Or do you have a new coaster/ashtray with "The Fall" neatly etched into it with a black felt tip pen ?

"Shift-Work" for the great track "High Tension Line'.

As a connoisseur of only 0,0000000001% of Mark "With an E, please-ah" Smith's work, my vote went for "Extricate-ah"!

They're due to play here in July, Benny, should I bother to check their actual line-up?

It'll be worth seeing in Porto, if MES can continue his recent vein of form. Can't wait for the new album !!

I plumped for Shiftwork, in the end. It's probably the most consistent album from start to finish - anything could have been a single. Although my favourite tracks are on "This Nation's Saving Grace", "Bend Sinister" and "Frenz Experiment".

There seems to be a new Fall compilation released every month now. Peel Sessions compendium just released. M.E.S. must be running out of money.

I went for Grotesque but Hex Enduction Hour has almost the same brilliance i must say though The New Real Fall.... is possibly the best thing mark has done in ten years as far as fav compilations........... the palace of swords reveresed is a goody and there is a strange one just called The Fall Collection on castle records i think one of the few places you will get the cover of A Day In The Life......... i could could go on for hours about this band...

Its the 25 year aniversery reissues time the compilations are usefull because there is so much there but they are put together so badly sometimes there pointles we are finally seeing the best quality cd re-issues of early Fall material Live At The Witch Trials etc before this year most of them had been mastered from scratched vinyl...

Damn, must've been drunk when I voted for Light User over Hex Enduction, definitely no duff tracks on that album, and an awesome opening brace of tracks in Classical, Jawbone, and Hip Priest.

Oh yeah, massive to Pavement for their "cover" of The Classical.

What about that singles compilation that had only numbers as its title? Anybody remember that and the accompaning b-side collection? That was my first proper introduction to The Fall.

458489 A sides and B sides ?

Not a bad 'un amongst 'em.

The Fall were a classic B sides band "Lucifer over Lancashire", "Pat-Trip Dispenser", "Shoulder Pads", the list is endless. Any one of them was better than most bands entire A sides collection.

Thought the two-disc reissue of Witch Trials was a must buy, what with all of the bonus tracks of various singles and such. At least I'm glad I hadn't bought the live Liverpool 78 disc yet, as it was included on the second disc, along with some BBC sessions. Plus, I'd never had the UK version of that one, which was a bit different. Very nice.

The Dragnet one wasn't quite as crucial, even though I bought it anyway, I'm not the sort who has to have 5 more takes of Rowche Rumble.

Been playing a number of comp tapes I'd made over the years, and I noticed that I had the b-side Fantastic Life (of Lie Dream) on a number of them, never get tired of listening to that one. Wings is also excellent.

Just what the world has been needing: another Fall compilation album, 50,000 Fall Fans Can't Be Wrong has been released this week, stateside at least. 2 discs spanning 78-03, 39 tracks, a lot of singles as well as some classic album cuts. Ian Pillar has the cover of this as his avatar, bought it even though I already have practically all of it.

in a "best of new order" type way the 50,000 (nice elvis homage) has different track lists depending on if its the US or UK versions.

anyone tell me which is the better (subjective i know) the unutterable, or the real new fall lp (us version with the better production)
