It was 22 years ago today.....

John Lennon's life was tragically ended. I've always felt a certain amount of reverance for the 8th of December, sort of like a holy day for Beatles fans. I mericlessly mock all those trailer park ladies who are seen crying at Elvis' grave every August, but this is one of the days I can understand why they feel that way (the 18th of May provokes a similar reaction for me). Anyway, just a thought of rememberance to the man and his music on the 22nd anniversary of his untimely death.

Cannat say that it was a big deal to me, I'm afraid. It may come as a shock to some of yers but I never had any fondness whatsoever for anything the Beatles ever did. To me they're just so fookin' overrated. I can't listen to any of their stuff at all. The way they constantly get canonised year in year out just makes me despise them all the more.... I suppose that's probably because none of our family took much of a shine to their music - apart from my elder sister who had one or two of their records, but that's aboot it....

In the 60's-70's me dad was a huge Stones and Who fan, and he loved the Kinks and the Animals (local heroes of course) as well. I suppose the latter two bands were the only ones from that time I ever got into. The Who were okay during their earlier years but when they went all over-the-top during the 70s onwards I couldn't stand them by then. "Tommy" - what a load of bollocks! Besides, anything with friggin' Elton John in it was a no-no...

I think the reason why our family were so anti-Beatles was simply because, being Tynesiders, we thought the Animals were so much better - and then when Trojan reggae took off, me dad and me elder brother Iain got heavily into it - which rubbed off on me inevitably.

Another reason to hate the Beatles - they were single-handedly responsible for giving us that even less palatable crock of shite, Oasis...... :barf:

Not a rabid fan of Lennon or the Beatles myself, but it was a big shock on that Monday night back then. Just picked up that Uncut magazine with the Lennon tributes CD, along with the Hard Day's Night DVD, so I'll still have a soft spot for the man, I suppose.

BTW Tabsy, if I were you, I'd avoid Tesco Vee and The Meatmen's stupid slap of punk shock horror 1 Down 3 To Go.

The Beatles were never a big deal to me, but I've always _quite_ liked _some_ of their stuff. I think their 'red' compilation record was the only record I owned when I was a child. I didn't really start paying attention or buying records till punk came along and concequently absorbed the punk khmer rouge style idea that nothing pre-76 was worth listening to.

Its weird though that I can remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard John Lennon had been shot. Though what really bugs the hell out of me is I can remember where I was and what I was doing when I heard Princess Di was dead - a person I never had any interest in at all. Why does my brain insist on retaining that information?
