Best U2 album

I only have "All That You Can't Leave behind", and I imagine that one pales compared to Joshua Tree or Actung Baby, so I'm gonna have to go with "All" (but if I ever get any more U2 I'll let you know to change my vote_

RATTLE and HUM is my favourite.

Undeniably pompous, but I really like U2. Almost all of these albums are splendid records. Only Rattle and Hum and All That You Can't Leave Behind aren't worthy of serious consideration here.

i used to be really into U2, but i haven't listened to them in ages. i think bono's a pompous prat now, and i've tired of them somewhat. having said this, i went for 'war' as i always thought it was their strongest album, followed by 'the joshua tree'. they filmed part of 'rattle and hum' in denver and i was in the audience for that one, which was pretty exciting--my first ever concert and my 13th birthday present!

Wow - what a coup that was - seeing the words "U2" and "pompous" repeated in four successive posts on this thread (well FIVE if you count this one).

Bono is pompous. He's no Joe Strummer. But then he's a fookin rock star. I want my rock stars to be pompous not the guy you meet up at the pub for a pint or two. Best U2 album, Achtung Baby. They haven't released anything good sine the early 90's.

My feelings about U2 are a bit like my feelings about Radiohead. I really feel I _ought_ to hate them, and find it impossible to defend them when others slag them off, but I can't get away from the fact that I do quite like their music in spite of myself.

And in spite of Bono's pomposity and the overblown over-dramatic nature of the music itself, in spite of Bono's attempts to pretend to have a sense of humour and in spite of their embarassing attempts at irony (even worse than the pomousity). Gosh that's a lot of spite.

Just like with Radiohead I feel I ought to hate them for their stereotypical public-school angst and middle class miserabilism, their pretentious refusal to write proper songs, but somehow I can't.

Whoopee...... That's SEVEN consecutive posts with the words "U2" and "pompous" in it now ... a staggering EIGHT including this one......!

Hmm, just to spoil your fun this post won't mention either U2 or the word pompous.

Bono is a pompous old mountain goat (quote partly nicked from Ian McCulloch). Only got the J Tree and R&H, like 'em both.

Radiohead aren't pompous, they are just a teensy bit pretentious. Fookin' good live though.

Achtung Baby is pretty good, as is Joshua Tree. Also saw them on their last tour, and they did a great job of making an arena seem very small. That was the day the Joey Ramone died however, and Bono got very choked up when he announced that fact onstage. That was a truly touching moment. :)

one story i found rather amusing was when patti smith received the NME lifetime achievement award back in 1997. bono recorded an introduction/tribute to her, in which he referred to her as a 'sister, lover and mother.' patti smith, not one to be impressed by sycophants, replied onstage with the words 'i'm not your mother bono. do your own dirty work. f*ck you.' afterwards, she called his remarks 'presumptuous'. right on, patti.

went off them after they got rich, like the early albums when they were angry young men, saw them on the joshua tree tour with lou reed, the pretenders, lone justice & thre pogues as support not a bad supporting line up! october great track, early albums best.

My vote goes to Achtung Baby. I really like All That You Can't Leave Behind and Joshua Tree too, though I'm getting a little tired of the latter.

Joshua Tree is a classic album... and WTSHNN is one of the best introduction-songs of the history of pop music...

Exactly, rock starts need some swagger and presence about them and Bono has it. Barney is great in his own way, but we need our legit rock stars like Bono. They have bought out consistently great music for a long period (although I think Zooropa is their last great album, Pop had some great tracks but was patchy, and ATYCLB is a further step down). I voted for Achtung Baby as their best, it has it all and is much more adventurous and vaired than Joshua Tree. Unforgettable Fire is my 2nd fave tied with Zooropa. Their similar to Depeche Mode in away, not afraid to sell themselves, which I have no problem with. Its all about the music, whether u sell 1 record, or 25 million, if you play in small clubs or stadiums. U2 must be doing something right to be attracting the amount of people they do 20+ years on.
