Anyone bought it?
Is it just me or does the Thea Gilmore track on the cover disk rip off a riff from Love Vigilantes? I like the track though (along with the Radio 4 one and the Fall one)
The article on the Clash was another example of what I dislike about Uncut, and most of the other monthlies. They all seem to be coming from this 'Encyclopedia of rock' angle - a world in which there is a holy 'canon' that bands must aspire to be admitted to. And where its considered a significant event for a 'celebrated US critic' (who on earth celebrates critics?) to give his seal of approval on the Clash's debut, 2 f***ing years after everyone else has loved it and moved on.
The article talks about how the sniffy ex-hippies of the music press at the time turned their noses up at the Clash's debut, but then goes on to demonstrate the exact same mentality, pompously declaring how the album has 'in time assumed its rightful place in the general scheme of things', i.e. been admitted to their precious canon. For some reason I found this article irritating.
I mean its not classical music, for Gawd's sake, there is no 'rightful scheme of things' where every album has its numbered place. I dunno what the right way to write about music is, but something about Uncut's approach really gets on my nerves.
